Blogging for Readers or Blogging for SEO? Why not Blog for Both!

By

There was a recent post that I am sure many people read regarding whether you should blog for your readers or be worrying about how search engines read your blogs. The premise was that somehow you have to pick one or the other and if so they would pick the reader. I guess this is because from what they understand of SEO or maybe just how a lot of people see SEO is that it sticks out like a sore thumb. But good SEO is good for the reader too. It’s the bad stuff that gets a bad rap.

 Cut off your thumbs!

Good SEO means that you write a blog title that contains some key words for your area but the title reads well. If I am talking about an open house that I am hosting in my area a good example would be “Check out this open house at 234 Example Street Eau Claire Wisconsin 54701” Is that any different than a non-SEO post? Probably not. The only thing I was consciously doing was trying to make sure that I include that it’s an open house (because someone might be looking for those words) and the zip code (someone might be looking for that and search engines can read zip codes) So really all I have done was to be conscious of a few small details. That’s it. But bad SEO is like this (open houses open homes Eau Claire open houses Eau Claire open homes search open houses online search Eau Claire open houses) You see the difference?

Good SEO means picking out some key words and writing naturally without repeating them over and over. Variations are more important than repetition. Continuing from above good SEO might be that I write about open houses throughout the above example but not necessarily in a specific pattern. I might talk about how I do other open houses in other areas or how you can actually look at open houses online on my website so good SEO might be “Search open houses online in Eau Claire, Altoona, and Chippewa Falls Wisconsin.”Not only is that telling people where they can go to find more open houses it’s also telling Google what that website is about. It’s a two-fer. But bad SEO looks like this “Search Eau Claire open houses find Eau Claire open homes look for Eau Claire open houses online” It’s repetitive and ugly and it smells like rotten SEO. This is sometimes referred to as keyword stuffing and it comes from the myth that Google likes a certain keyword density but it’s just not true.

But no SEO is just as bad and it does nothing for your readers. No SEO looks like this “Search open houses online in Eau Claire, Altoona, and Chippewa Falls Wisconsin at my website.” What website? What is the website about? One might infer that you can look for open houses there but how can the reader be sure that’s what that link is for or where it is taking them? Even for basic security reasons some might not click on that link. It’s non-descriptive and it’s doing nothing for your reader or for Google.

You see the problem now? Some people think bad SEO is good SEO and no SEO is not quite as bad as bad SEO is but it’s not good either. (That’s a mouthful!)

Clearly one is better than the other. You can choose not to use SEO but you are missing out on a very valuable aspect of blogging. While you may not think it’s important or you may think that being at the top of Google is either unachievable or something you don’t want but I find it hard to believe that if one of the goals of writing a good blog is to get more exposure and traffic to your website then getting to the top of Google will certainly achieve that goal. The problem is that there is an obvious confusion as to what Google is looking for (Not a specific keyword density or keyword stuffing) rather a well written post that is descriptive. By descriptive I mean including elements such as location and writing good anchor text for links. That's it. That's all you basically need to know about good SEO. It's not a big secret and it isn't even hard. You can learn how to write good anchor text in seconds.

Basically SEO doesn’t have to be one or the other. You don’t have to put 25 links in each post. Overdoing SEO is bad SEO. Overdoing anything is awful to read. If it’s awful for the reader, then it’s probably bad SEO. Good SEO is good for the reader and Google. So you do have a choice, learn how to write well and use good SEO or choose not to and miss out on one of the most important bonuses of blogging (Good link Juice.) Be a successful blogger or have a very successful website? I choose both!

Thanks for the tips, Shane. I'm still learning all of this (slowly), so any info about SEO is great for me. Plus, if you do the bad SEO (like this "Search Eau Claire open houses find Eau Claire open homes look for Eau Claire open houses online"), it looks very agressive and sales-y. A turnoff for just about all of my clients.

Very good points there Shane - I do this all the time. One thing I have learned to do, or not to do is to try not to have the post picked up for a ton of keywords (diluting the ones that are important). I try to concentrate on a few specific ones. Also as for the open house I add subdivision if it is a recognized one and occasionally the day of the week so I might write Open House Sat in Firelight Highlands Ranch etc. as people are more likely to search for that than the address or like you said: open house open house open house... ~Rita

I just really think people might not know how to do it and there is no reason to not be doing it. I hope the examples made sense.

Search engine optimization is seen by many as the method to manipulate the search results which may lead to a site not relevant to a keyword ranking high on the search results page. Although it may be useful for the website owner as users often don't turn to page two or three for more results, it may also mean less relevant results for the user.

This is basically the building stone of your site. This is what determines whether you land on the first or second page. As you no, there is no much use in getting as the second page since when customers do not find what they are looking for on the first page, the assume it does not exist. So you get the much importance that onsite has in SEO.
