National Doughnut Day celebrates the doughnut and honors the brave "Salvation Army Lassies," women who served doughnuts to soldiers on the front line of Europe during first World War. Doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers and that's how American Infantrymen first got the name of "doughboys."
