Owning marble, starts with knowing your marble!

Everywhere you look these days, you see marble. Its the designers choice for clean modern looking kitchens in the Chicagoland Area. Owning marble must start with knowing marble, whats recommended & what you can or cant do.  Marble is a metamorphic stone that forms when limestone is subjected to heat and pressure. It is composed primarily of calcite, as well as other minerals including micas, quartz, pyrite, iron oxides and graphite.

The species of marble is available in these various color types:

  • White
  • Black
  • Gray
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Pink

Marble Finish Types:

Polished Marble - High Gloss, Hyper Sensitive, Prone to Spots and Etching

Marble with a polished finish has a shiny, glossy surface. This finish is achieved through a grinding and buffing process. High polished marble is prone to spots and etching. Although this finish type looks amazing, its a hyper sensitive finish prone to spots, etching and rings marks. Regardless of sealer type a high gloss polish is susceptible to etching and spots caused by liquids containing acids.

Honed Marble (a.k.a. matte)- Spot Free "Anti" Etch Finish Perfect For Kitchens

Marble with a honed finish has a smooth, almost soft texture. This finish is achieved through a sanding process. It mutes the color slightly while creating a satiny look. This finish is excellent choice for look and durability. The honed finish is the basis for a Spot Resistant or Anti Etch Finish.  This finish combined the correct sealers provide the protection and look resistant to spots and etch marks. However its essential the proper maintenance plan is also used in conjunction with this finish to maintain the spot free finish.

Well this explains why my marble bath has gray spots around my tub due to the use of moisturizing soaps. No matter how many times I apply a remover to it, let it dry and wash it off, the gray etching never completely goes away. I feel like choosing polished marble has ruined my remodel.

That explains alot. Was wondering why some stains seem to be hard to remove or still there. This will help in the next DYI remodel project if ever.
