DON'T CALL IT A MASTER!

I was listening to a Nationally known Christian talk show on the Christian radio station I love (and often fill in on) and I learned something new. What do YOU call this room when showing a house?

Well if you call it the Master bedroom your client may storm out in rage... offended by an image like this in their head.

Yup, our offended at everything society now finds "Master bedroom" offensive. I guess the new term is "Primary" bedroom so get with it before you offend a hyper sensitive client just looking for a reason to explode in rage.

Good morning Bob. So many problems that really need solving and they want me to cease using “master bedroom” and substitute “owners suite”? Rage on! I got better things to do. Enjoy your day

I am in total agreement Wayne Martin . It's funny what will upset some people these days.

Hello Bob - as Thomas J. Nelson, REALTOR ® e-Pro CRS RCS-D Vets commented "context" makes a difference.

It sure does Michael Jacobs . I also like/appreciate Thomas J. Nelson, REALTOR ® e-Pro CRS RCS-D Vets 's "spot on" comment.

In my MLS we have a field where you can check off the interior and exterior features and one of the hard coded choices is "Master Bedroom on first floor." I doubt that's going away any time soon.

Good morning again, Bob. I've long called it the owner's suite/bedroom. Partially because I didn't like the masculine connotation of master. What if the only occupant of the room is a woman? Our MLS switched to primary bedroom some time ago.

What has always been interesting to me is that I've never heard a client (of any race or gender) complain about it being called a master suite.

I know the Minot MLS had the same wording Kat Palmiotti when I was active. Had a change been proposed while I was on the board I think I would have laughed at it.

I've never heard of anyone complain about it either Nina Hollander, Broker and until I heard the comment the other day I had never connected whips and chains to Master Bedroom". Now I think it's funny. On the other hand I certainly would not object or even think twice if you were showing me homes and said this is the Owners Suite.

Good morning Bob "RealMan" Timm ,

It's interesting I've never had any client enraged over the "primary" bedroom being called the master bedroom. The MLS changed after caving in to political pressure. We have so many important issues to solve in this wasn't one of them.

Me neither Dorie Dillard Austin TX . I thought the whole thing was funny when I saw it.

Hi Bob - I have heard people make the most ridiculous complaints about words where it would be such a stretch to use their interpretation.

Hello Bob.  History shows, unfortunately, that most things that start off with good intentions, are then taken far beyond the meaningful step first taken.  Eventually we get to the 'Master Bedroom' stage.  It is a crying shame.  Mark

Hi Bob "RealMan" Timm - Great discussion and I enjoyed reading the comments.

My POV...

I watch a lot of real estate shows and noticed this term being used about 2 years ago.  I do my very best to stay current on trends.

I am a salesperson and respect others and their POV.  However, this isn't about PC or "being woke".  Both terms are like nails on a chalkboard for me. Those of us who have, (how should I put this,) "matured" due to our age, know that fashions change, real estate designs change, floor plans evolve, populations shift, and so does terminology.

As real estate salespeople, we need to be current on all things real estate.  We need to know what is current trends are including, furniture styles, home styles, color schemes, landscape schemes, and home tech.  I could go on and on. It is just that simple to me.

For example, If you don't know what a Toto toilet is or does, your high-end client may reconsider who they use for their REALTOR®.

Stay current and know your market and your client and be respectful.

A quick short story... (as if this wasn't long already!)

My husband who is my photographer, was at lunch with me and a client, back in 2014. I knew the client was also an amateur photographer. The two men started talking about photography and my husband said that he uses a slave flash for fill in light in certain situations.  The client went off on him.  I mean WENT OFF in a restaurant. He said "NEVER USE THAT WORD AGAIN".  Rick and I remained silent.  There was no explaining to the person that this was a common term used in photography.  He pulled out of a deal before the inspection period ended and went back to his home state. I pulled him out of my contact list.

I still hear about this story from Rick.  It was 7 years ago!! Haha!

BTW - Canon, the camera that Rick uses, dropped the term Master and Slave from thier equipment descriptions back in July 2020.  However, photographers still use these terms.

If a term can be misconstrued as offensive it will be Jan Green . If I were still active I'd probably do my best to try to call it a "owners suite".
