My family was in the trades, My father and his 5 brothers each had a specialty. They contracted and I helped when not in school. I was encouraged to pursue an Education but, Schooling didn't hold an interest for me, except for Gym,study hall, lunch period and Architectural drafting classes.
I gave up a college education majoring in the Architectural arts to earn a living working with my hands. I helped the masons, helped frame walls set windows and doors, hung siding, nailed roofing shingles, ran wire and set outlets and switches, soldered copper and glued pvc, hung cabinets and sheetrock, then painted it. set tile and went out for coffee.
I went back to school in order to get my Real Estate license... that lasted about 6 months.. Brand new office and Broker with empty shelves... spun my tires trying to fill the shelves with listings while the other agents sat in the office waiting for "ups".
Went to work for a large contracting firm as a Contract Cost Estimator and project lead...... then struck out on my own. I contracted in all the trades, from roofing to plumbing, electric, carpentry painting even masonry work. Always a Jack of all trades, master of none. A generalist. The Home ispector is just that, a generalist. We are not masters of any particular trade, we generalize all trades and are trained to find defects affecting the health safety and working components of your home.I am now at the age where I don't want to wear my hands out anymore. (work your fingers to the bone... what do you get?..... Bony fingers) anyhow... bundle it all into one neat package and what have you? a Home Inspector.
Having been involved in the trades for the past 40 years, I bring a level of understanding to the profession that can not be met by someone who woke up one day, decided they were tired of being a Mortgage loan specialist and decided to become a "Home Inspector".
Beware of Inspectors that spent the last 30 years as an Electrician or an HVAC specialist or a plumber. Ask them what hands on experience they've had in all the trades involed in putting a home together.
It is said that experience is nothing but a collection of mistakes, I have a LOT of experience.
I also believe that those that do not learn from past mistakes are doomed to repeat them. I am a FAST learner.
