Hello Sheila and Larry --

This and other situations happen even with occupied properties.

Missing lockboxes

Missing keys

Doors left wide open

As Lise Howe commented -- contact the listing agent and let them know the situation so they are aware and hopefully correct

Of course - either that or the key is missing - I always let the agent know so that they know I was not responsible

It happens a couple of times a week it seems. not always the log box missing, but code wrong or key missing,  On my own REO homes i suffer a lock box loss every other week it seems. Not sure who is stealing them, a buyer who doesnt want anyone else to see? old owner? or preservation companies?

There was one house that was not only missing the lockbox, but the handle too...... and the door was broken.   We never found the lockbox.

Yep.  In the heydey of foreclosures if somebody liked the home they would steal the key so nobody else could look at it.  Then there would be less offer because it would take two days to get a new key out there

The lockbox wasn't missing but the keys were and there was no one inside showing it.

Lockbox missing, key missing, key doesn't work or doesn't need to because the last agent left the door unlocked or wide open....

Yes indeed.  I don't understand why but the last time this happen it turned out thugs had cut the box off the listing and tossed it in some bushes.  I let the listing Agent know immediately.

Yes, several times.

Sometimes listing agents will leave the shackle code in the box and it gets taken by other agents. Unprofessional.

OH, yeah. Not so much any more, but during the foreclosure peak that was a semi-regular occurence.  A call to the listing office would sometimes be helpful and they'd tell me where the key was 'hidden'.  Most often the list agent's team hadn't been out after the locks were changed.  A rare instance was when a resident homeowner got mad at the listing agent and removed the lockbox himself.
