Jeff Dowler CRS - this is a common question and answer is simple, too! Ask the neighbor!

Also, I send them the printed list of names of the owners from public records.

I tell people (with a little laugh) that I know the houses, but not the people who live in them in this neighborhood. I suggest they drive, or take a walk, around the neighborhood.

The boilerplate reply is "we deal in properties, not people".  There are many ways that a consumer can gather information and draw their own conclusions, without dragging a real estate agent into the issue.

I would tell them I truly don't know and even if I did I could not tell them because of the Fair Housing Laws.  I suggest they drive through the neighborhood at different time of the day to determine if the neighborhood suites them.

Hi Jeff -- Yes, I have been asked.   Many don't realize the question can be interpreted as discrimination.  As others have said - I typically say all kinds of people and suggest that they drive or walk through the neighborhood at various times, stop by the stores/restaurants in the area and talk with neighbors to get a feel for the neighborhood.

Been asked many times.....I kind of prefer what Mark Twain said  " When in doubt, tell the truth. Always tell the truth. That way you don't have to remember what you said."  So...knowing that, this is a difficult question because the truth revolves around things like fair housing law, steering, etc. The truth really  is ....... I  really don't know the true make up of neighborhoods. Who lives behind every door.  How much the actual crime is. If someone challenges my professionalism and knowledge on the makeup of the neighborhood....I tell the truth about fair housing etc. I also tell them they can check out police stats on line regarding crime rates etc. And I remind them I could never be a party to any descriminatory practice or neighborhood deminishment.

If you are mature enough to buy real estate, apply for a loan , and be a party to complex legal documents .... you can decide without my opinion if  the neighborhood is for you other than the information we provide on real property , schools,  drive times etc.

I suggest them to do their own research: drive around, talk to some neighbors, check some web-pages.

I give occupations if I know them. I don't talk about age, race, color or nat. origin. I also make general statements like All types. I then suggest if they need more information, to come back at different times of the day to see if it is a quiet neighborhood or really active and even talk with the neighbors.

I always tell them to do their on due dillegence and visit the area at different times of the day and to call the sherrifs dept for crime statistics because legally I can not offer any opinion that could sway their decisions.

I am asked that a lot.  My answers are very vaugue.  I tell them to drive around the neighborhood.   Go knock on the neighbors door and ask them.  But other than what you can see I don't say much.

I have had that question Jeff and I wince incide when I hear it. My most comfortable solution is to point them to a reference site online that breaks down demographics of a neighborhood. It is such a delicate area that I try to play it safe.

I tell them I show homes and can tell them prices of the houses . They should drive by the areas they are interested in and talk to the neighbors if they like a house.

Jeff,

My answer to stuff like that is all types of people from all walks of life...I have been asked by landlords in retail centers as to what nationality I have shown the location to, and my answer is, I don't ask, and they are probably Americans...LOL
