We use a title company or attorney for the earnest money and we go by their policies.

NO.  My Broker and I do not require certified or wired funds.  In some cases that is just extra costs for the buyer. 

BUT, He does call the bank and veify that the funds are there before he deposit the check.

No....we do have some tiitle companies that do that...not welcome by Buyers when a wire is the only accepatable method.

No... in fact we don't take wire transfers. If a client wants to wire funds go to the closing attorney. We really haven't had any serious issues with bad checks.

My company still accepts EMDs as checks. There are many companies around here who no longer accept EMD at all.

Our broker doesn't have a policy per se but our standard California purchase agreement now states that unless otherwise stated that earnest money funds are electronically transferred.  That's generally how it is handled.  If it is a check then it needs to be logged into a trust fund log and properly documented.
