What Matters to You, Means Everything to Me!

Well, it's not when you want to protect personal and confidential information that you're sharing.  And, it's not when your home and all the cell towers around it lose electricity during a severe storm.  It's not when you need emergency 911 services (land lines identify you by address).  And can you remember the day when telephone conversations were not interrupted by dropped service?  And, oh I almost forgot.  I think home security systems still rely on land lines to connect to monitoring stations.  So, when would I know it's time to give up my land line?   Could it be when I'm on my death bed?

Good morning Debbie. That is a great question. We used to have two different land lines at home, gave one of them up, does that count?

When you believe it wise to put ALL of your communication eggs in one basket, that is the time to terminate your land line service.

When hurricanes threaten Florida, the wireless networks are quickly overwhelmed, then cyberspace gets foggy, and looking at that receptacle on the wall makes one ask, "What have I done?"

In TN, this may not be a concern, therefore, an easier decision.

Like Jeff Pearl we are in a secluded area with only DSL for internet. Funny thing is, it's a lot faster than the so-called "high speed internet" we were getting from Comcast when we lived in a highly congested area.

We gave it up a long time ago. Our office is a free Google number that rings all of us, actually three of us, we don't need a line for a fax anymore, and for foreign national calls we use WhatsApp which makes the calls free. Why pay money for something you don't need? I would add that when we had a Cox home line it was mostly spam calls and I certainly don't miss those.

We realized that hardly anyone was calling us on our land line ... except for telemarketers ... years ago.  It became an expense we didn't need to have.   And the decision to cancel our landline service was an easy, simple one ...

We can't. We need landline for DSL internet service, and some of our relatives only use land lines. Some don't even have internet service or email.

We recently changed our home phones to Bluetooth so when my cell rings I answer it with the landline.  With a 2 story home it's hard to only have 1 phone. Also, if you have a package with home phone and internet etc, when you delete the phone your internet access rates go UP.  Not worth it.

With all of the technology we have available at our fingertips today, I can't remember the last time I saw a home with an actual phone and a  land line. We are all connected, on so many levels via social media, our cell phones have all we need to communicate, send e-mails, blogs and we have access to the world and each other.

I haven't used a land line in 20 years. It surprises me that people still do, but I'm also a minimalist. Other than the occasional reception problems, which are fewer and fewer, I don't see any real need to have another phone other than your cell.

Debbie- We gave up our landline about 6 years ago.  I'd kept it only in case of power outages during a hurricane but it was silly for us to spend $50 a month for something we didn't use.  We considered a very basic line but even that would be $50 a month.

Good question, Debbie. I was thinking maybe it's time but then what number would all the telemarketers call. We never pick up our land line. Just delete the numbers every few days.

I will never give up my land line ... at least not voluntarily. Only when the service is no longer an option. I hope by then I will be long since dead and gone from the land of phones.
