Funny--some of the more sophisticated counter tops can give off a nasty dose of Radon gas depending on where the granite/rock came from...

I'll take the 80's tile and grout any day. I've got grout cleaning down to a science... If I wait long enough, it may even come back into style......OK....Probably not...

As far as I'm concerned, granite is King! Even when quartz looks great I always have people saying "oh, I wish they'd changed their counters to granite." Quartz seems to be more liked for bathroom counters (at least in my market)>

Quartz has overtaken granite, because it looks as good and doesn't require the regular sealing.

Roy,
For several years I have been reading articles about the demise of granite but it is still, by far, what buyers are looking for. Don’t settle for the routine slabs. Go to a slab yard and find something unique.

Hi Roy -- it depends on the buyer --- there are so many choices available today in a variety of price ranges and level of quality. What personally is a choice for one person may not be right for another.

For me, I would go with something more timeless than one that "dates" the kitchen as in "that's so 2016".   Hopefully you can share the before/after photos in a post.   Good luck and have fun.

We are still debating but have ruled out granite due to the radon emissions and since it seems to be on the way out here. It is still being used, mainly because it has come down in price so much but for resale value, we will probably go with quartz.
