It depends on the market it is in.  Here open houses are held on Saturday and Sundays 1:30-4:30. Every market is different. A

We have received good results with Thursday pm 4-7 to catch the commuters after woeork

When I used to do open houses, I actually had quite a bit of traffic on a Friday early afternoon.  It is amazing how people are out and about on that day.

Any day seems to work as long as I get things lined up ahead of time, had one on Sunday from 1-7, very very busy. And productive.

I think the buying public are used to the Sunday 12 or 1 to 4 or 5 pm and look for those ads in the weekend newspapers.

we hold them every weekend and the Sunday afternoon opens are always the best...Saturday is usually a day for errands and sporting events for the kids...

For a brand new listing Thursday evening from 5 to 7.

Otherwise Sunday from 12 to 3.

I tried different days and different times of the day, yet traditional time when everyone has open house on Sunday, works the best. Usually it is 2-5pm. 

Richard Weeks makes a great point. Open house strategy definitely needs to be seasonal. With football season up and running Saturdays and Sundays are going to have less effectiveness than other times of year. 

We've tried alternative days and times to no avail. In our market area, Sundasy from 1-4 are the only times buyers are out there.

We hold ours on Sundays 1 - 3 pm...  Honestly, I don't think there is any "best" day/time or a greater % of homes would sell using these events...  ;)

I still do 1 to 4 pm on Sunday, and maybe on Saturday.  Works pretty well most of the time.

John DL Arendsen it depends on the area where you are hosting the open house. It's seasonal, too - in MA, I can host open houses from 2-4 in Summer whereas in winter, it is not a great idea.

And I prefer 11-1 on Sunday.

I just have to say NEVER is the best time. 

Sunday afternoons are the best for open houses in my community.

For me, the best day(s) and time(s) are - Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. in non-snowbird season.  In snowbird season, same timeframe, afternoons, though I do Wednesdays through Sundays John DL Arendsen.

In my market there isn't a best day and time. They don't work. I've tried them, and thank goodness for my laptop for entertainment. They always turned out to be a big waste of my time. 

Saturday and Sunday between 2 and 4 pm are the most common times in my trading area.  I don't know whether it is the best time and date as I have not seen any studies but it is the most common time and date.

I would go with the tried and true weekend open houses from 1 to 4 pm.

Sunday is busier, people don't have soccer games and errands. 1- 4 (maybe stay until 4:15 if the traffic keeps flowing. Every community in Orange County has crazy sign restrictions. Some will pick up your signs if not the right color, shape and minimal number. I suggest you put up inexpensive signs as much as your heart desires, add a teen with headphones and a twriling sign if you have to, Forgiveness is easier than permission. I've done open houses with agent buddies and expect to drive at minimum 80 sets of couples or singles. IF a two story house, you need a partner. Remove all valuables - people steal small shiny things, medications and phones. If you make them sign in many of the emails will be wrong. If your gut says "alarm" ask for their driver's license and pretend the seller requires it. Have your phone in hand to take pictures.  Then prepare to have some fun. It's going to be hot this weekend- icy lemonaide or clear colored snow cones out back. If you are going to do it plan to connect with two buyers who don't have an agent, 1 neighbor who needs to list, and the buyer for your listing who doesn't have their ducks in a row.  

10-4 is ideal and covers it all for everyone. If you play, you play those hours

When I use to do them it was Sunday from 2-4.  Unless it was football season, in which case would do the on Saturday.

Out here: Sunday 1-4 is the official time for a public open house.

Thursday late afternoon and Sunday early afternoon seem to get the best results. Depending on location, anytime may generate traffic!
