This is an old manure spreader. Much of the floor is gone, but that is what it is. I did a lot of spreading with this in my younger years,.

My first thought was a hay bailer when I saw it, just as Lyn Sims also did. But when I saw the answer of Sandy Padula and Norm Padula, JD, GRI NMLS#1483386 , I concluded they must be right. There is a seat at the back, facing out, to let someone pull the manure forward and loosen the jams. Not sure what the chains do underneath. The wood has all rotted away because manure that has sat all winter "maturing" and then thawed in the Spring is so gentle on all the wood(!) and the whole bottom was affected. The only wood left is near the person's seat. A hay bailer would not have rotted so thoroughly in so many places. Interesting. If it began its life in horse-drawn days, those horses would have to have known their way around the field without the man on the back giving much direction ...or else it was a two-man job and the other man was knee-deep in it. Fun!
