No. Very rarely. Popular here are open floorplans with virtually no division between kitchen and living area.

Seems to be a bit age dependent but most of my buyers want a "big" kitchen and great room.   I can do without the formal living room but do like a nice dining room.

Yes, most of my Buyers demand both. 

Very rarely here Maria Sapio  but I would say that people purchasing homes in the upper price brackets usually get a formal dining and living room.

Formal dining rooms are not a common request any longer. Buyers often want a family room/eating area/kitchen more commonly. But it varies by price point, too!

 Most of the new builds are "open plans".  This may be more on the part of the builders, to save costs.  Traditionalists still want family, living, dining.

I was showing a buyer, single 30 YR old a nice home with a formal living room and dining room and he turned to me and asked ..."what do I do with that space?  I had to laugh and said what about a game room, home theatre or pool table or something like that...so it's only space and rooms.  Pay no attention to how it's decorated or currently used.  

To answer the question; no I don't think they want rooms used as such but they do like the space and to turn it into a space that they will use.

They always say a formal dining room is a waste of space.... and yet, I've yet to find a buyer who'll buy a home without space for more formal dining. Living rooms not as important and being replaced by studies/home offices.

Maria Sapio - working with different buyers - some of them look for a condo, and they don't care if there is a living room or not! And some spend a lot of money and do expect the living room as well as formal dining room.

I think most of us work with buyers with different needs. Nothing to do with the area - just my two cents.

Formal dining, yes.  Formal living - they prefer to add French doors and use the space as an office.

Good question. From my experience, rarely does the request for separate formal dining and living rooms are requested.

Both, they want an open plan where all rooms are flawing into each other. 

Unless we go above around 3500 SF the answer is no.

They want both of these rooms though they will probably use neither for those purposes. I hear them say they will use them for offices and playrooms, home school rooms or music rooms.

For the Average/Medan price range, the big and open Kitchen + Family room is the more popular option

The majority of the buyers I work with really like an open concept where the kitchen opens up to the living area and dining room area.

Most often families want a family room and a living room, not so formal but one of the parents and one for the kids use. When it comes to dining, a dining area is requested more than a formal dining room, but in upscale homes it is a must 

The dining room is still expected in the higher price ranges but most are rarely used. We could do without our dining room and our living room and I expect many others could as well. 

Very few care about a LR

Our market, buyers preference of an open floor plan. No need for formal living rooms. 

Some do, yes; others don't care,  even when building. It's interesting, because even though not many people use those rooms, especially LR's, if there is a family room, they still reject homes that don't have them, thinking of resale value.

In my area, most want an open floor plan for the kitchen/dining/living areas. I find very few want a separate and formal dining room or formal living room.

Formal living room? Yes.

Dining room? In a 2-3 bedroom house, sometimes. In a 4 or more bedroom house, always.

Probably more not needing the formal dining room.  In fact, some are using it for their home office and removing the chandelier.

It is not a huge preference here - getting into the higher end luxury homes still at least have a formal dining space but for the most part people don't want them in the average home and want a great room.  We did see builders start using a space that can be formal living, dining or office space depending on how the buyer wants to use it with larger french doors or something that gives the ability to keep it open or close it up depending on the use. -Kasey

Not really.  Buyers are wiser and more conscious of usable space around their house. Many builders are building Great room - combo living room and family room.

Only the trade-up market insists on the formals. Today, it is function that counts along with pricing. People can always tradeup

Formal dining rooms tend to be out, although they want a dining area.  The open concept is big and is in direct conflict with the "formal room" concept.

yes...no one uses that living room, but they all want it for resale purposes!!!! people expect it to be there.... actually, the home I sold once the family was grown and gone, had a 30' living room and we had a black laquer baby grand piano in it.... a nice piece of furniture that fit perfectly in that sized room....

Each buyer has their own requirements.

No.  Family rooms and eat-in kitchens are the big play with the buyers that I serve. Great Rooms and media rooms are nice too.

Not really here in Florida, but that is a selective choice by many buyers from the north used to traditional home styling.

Most people are still interested in the open floorplan. Formal dining seems more appropriate for entertaining and I'm too busy dealing with kids and homework.

Fewer and fewer, but some still like to have them.
