We lost my MIL to Alzheimers 2 years ago but fortunately this was in the UK and the National Health took great care of her to the end.  My Mother is 88 and mentally sound (thank God) but we have all of her paperwork in order just in case.

It's a tough issue but planning ahead is important. I am the trustee for my Mom's trust and also we have all the health care documents in order should they be needed. No dementia at this time thankfully, at 90.

Barbara,

Luckily we both lost our parents before that was the case, and new research shows that some dementia is caused by poor breathing habits. Deep breathing brings oxygen to the brain as opposed to shallow breathing.    A

Yes our family dealt with seeing my Dad with this horrible disease - tough on everyone and most of all him. Sometimes he was so confused as to why he was confused. He was one of those guys who was on top of everything. Thankfully everything was handled properly way before we lost him and my Mom.

Fortunately, on a personal level, have not had to deal with this with my parents. And as I was my mother's power of attorney and executor, it was easy to dispose of her property and estate after she passed. I have had the occasional client who has dealt with just this issue. It's not easy.

Going thru it right now with my parent. Dad's Alzheimer is controlled at this moment, but I know the time will arrive when meds will no longer be of use. In my Asian family, we just don't talk or discuss of what ifs or how to prepare. I have tried several times to no avail to try to get their finances in order. At this point, all I can say is...it is, what it is.

Yes and you need to be very very cautious in your selection of attorneys whether prepping for the future or a more current pressing need... many in this field charge ridiculous fees upfront without providing any details of what they actually do. I just went through a situation with a beloved Aunt, who had everything well organized until her long time partner/executor passed away and in her grief, she neglected to appoint another executor for her own estate before she had a stroke and became incapacitated.

All I will say is it was a trying and difficult situation until we were able to find a wonderful woman who is an eldercare attorney whose background is in healthcare, and whose partner is a CPA.   They were able to go to court and become appointed as my aunt's fiduciary (this took place in California while the rest of family is largely in Virginia), thankfully, and get her placed in a terrific assisted living facility.

We were relatively lucky in how everything turned out, but it gave me quite an insight into what can happen with folks' lives if they are not properly prepared.  And dementia/alzheimers can rear its ugly head at a much younger age than anyone realizes. My aunt had good friends and a substantial estate, which certainly helped, and it was still quite a challenge there for a while. It is critical folks be prepared.

The Last Name You'll Ever Need in Real Estate

Many years ago, my father fell and was hospitalized. When we realized the extent of his injuries, my mother arranged with an elder attorney to get his affairs in order and to protect his and my mother's assets as best as possible - prepaid funeral expenses, etc. As it turns out, the injury was permanent as he spent the next 14 years in a subacute facility until his death 2 years ago.

It was among the most difficult things I've ever worked through. If this is something you're facing, I'm happy to lend an ear.

Now I'm trying to remember who I was trying to see.

I have all my ducks in a row, with my Will and both Powers of Attorney in place.  I also made sure my mother had hers in place, as well as my elderly aunts.  I also had my mom's and my aunt's accounts in both our names siince i was POA for both, so nothing to probate.  I have done the same with my daughter... accounts in both names so she doesn't have to go through Probate either. Since I am an Accredited Senior Agent, I also ensure my clients have all their paperwork in place as well..
