I am SO in agreement with Dave Halpern & Carol Williams on this. 

What a ridiculous rule that could very easily be waived. Sounds like the HOA needs to elect a new Board - one whose members appreciate living in the USA!

I'm against anything that denies patriotic Americans the right to display the American flag.  

If it has been there for four years, it should be grandfathered! While the association has rights, they may have waived them!

Oh give me a break people.  He is a vet.  He sacrificed everything.  Show the guy some respect and get off his case!  Move on.

The flag of the USA should be exempt from all of these silly restrictions.

I hope he leaves it on and fights them.... so un-American.... who would even suggest that be included in HOA docs? 

The sooner they outlaw hoa's the better.

Part of me wants to say:

"This is 'Merica!  Leave the flag alone you darn Commie bastard!"

but the other part of me says:

"if you allow one person to have a US flag, someone will want their national flag on their box (let's assume it's not the US for sake of argument).  What happens then when someone else wants a Dallas Cowboys wrap on their mailbox?  If you allow one variance you open the door to allowing them all."

I heard this story on the news yesterday and today... and I am totally outraged. No wonder HOA's have such a bad rep.

Seems to me it is like the fence in the other guy's yard for years.... you had to chance to say something!

HOA rules can alwatys be changed. My suggestion is that he solicits neighbors for a change and if they are for it it changes and against he he changes.

OUR country's flag should be able to be displayed unconditionally. This HOA needs a new board, apparently these board members have way too much time on their hands.

No way should the flag come down.  

Slippery slope argument if the HOA doesn't prevail.  If they allow a flag wrap, what if I want to have my mailbox wrapped in the flag of my ancestor's homeland?  Why would the US flag be ok, but my grandpa's country's flag not ok?

Once you open the door, you might as well remove all mailbox restrictions and (apparently) that is not what the HOA wants.  People bought into the community knowing the rules.

I think American flags should not be removed from American soil, period. 

This seems like a no win situation !

We had something like this happen in my last community and the county over ruled the HOA and the Vet was allowed to fly his flag. 

Kind of silly for the HOA to get involved with this.  I'm guessing it's due to a disgruntled neighbor.

HE should be protected by federal law, which superceded HOA rules.

I would think if the wrap has been on the mailbox for four years, that rule had already been ignored by the HOA and should be null and void. 

I'm glad he'll be meeting with the HOA on Tuesday in an attempt to get that rule changed. Not allowing an American Flag on a mailbox is not a rule I'd support.

I would  put up one hell of a fuss...fight... campaing...call it what ever you want but if I did not prevail than sell and let them know how I feel...and why...Endre

If you live in a community with a HOA, you need to comply with the rules.

Get active and change the rules when appropriate.

South Vietnam has ceased to exist for 42 years. Its yellow banner is all over US. When a Vietnamese American hang the correct DPR Vietnam flag in Orange County, CA he gets beat up. State Dept tried to intervene but no avail. May be UN is the place to escalate since the delegates are having a good time according to our president Donald.

Fred Griffin It sounds like someone complained he is violating the HOA rules. From the photo it looks like all of the mailboxes are uniform. My opinion: Leave it alone.

HOA prevails

He should not have to remove the American flag wrap.  It sounds as though some hater of America was elected to the board and has decided to exert some new found influence. 

Glad to see this Veteran prevailed Fred.  Our hero Veterans should always prevail on such matters.  Vets and our American flag should always be treated with the utmost respect that each deserves.

We as Americans should be proud of our flag. In his case it was on his mail box....So What! If this is all that HOA has to worry about, they are very lucky. Veterans should be given  a PASS, anytime they want to display the flag. I have started a petition to make it a Federal offense to desecrate our flag. As a Disabled Marine Vietnam Veteran, we must start making America PROUD again!  Semper Fi!

It seems to me that any display of our Flag should be excepted from HOA rules, with a limit on flag size agreed upon by a general  association vote

If it's in the deed restrictions, he has to take it down, but depends on how they are written in terms of possible grandfather clauses.

I would love to be his attorney. 

Fight to change the rules some people just have too much time on their hands.
