In newer homes they are vented, in older homes they are generally just a fan and filter.

Range hood on mid level homes & down draft on high end. If it doesn't vent outside it's not going to do much for you. Considering how simple it is for a builder to do I'd consider it a low cost option that is a must.

Fred ~ In our area for construction within the past 10 years, it is almost all exterior; whether downdraft or over range hood.  For the condos in the area, most are recirculating/non-venting in nature.

For older resale properties, they are all over the map so you never really know what you are getting until you walk the property.

Most common is ventless range hoods. However upscale and newer homes with gas, i am seeing vented hoods. Builders vary depending on how upscale they are. Starter homes ventless, luxury, vented.

Builders offer it all... a lot depends on what a buyer is willing to pay and space in a kitchen. I didn't want a hood, as I didn't want to lose cabinet space above my cooktop... so I opted for a down draft.

depending on the price range of the home, the median price range would get an allowance for a hood.... high end would be down draft for a cooktop or large hood depending on the type of commercial grade stove....

Decorative range hoods are preferred here if the range is on the wall. If it's in the island, most prefer the down-drafts.

In the low-end range, it is a filtered range hood, very basic. In the higher price categories, it is fully vented and even has some designer qualities to it. I don't see many downdrafts anymore.

Personally, I like downdraft...I am not fond of hoods no matter how well designed they are.  We are living in a no-growth area, so very little new construction unless it is a tear down..A

Most builders offer hoods with extraction to the outside. If our clients are Asian they ask for a more powerful exhaust usually as builders often use a low power exhaust fan.

Depending on the area & price range - I've got a stove now that is convection, has a griddle burner & a whole bunch of other stuff that I don't know how to work. I think in a certain price range you better have at least a Wolf stove or above.

Vented out is better.

As long as it is vented outside, it doesn't reallly matter much.. its a matter of esthetics then... it's whatever your personal preference is. I'm not up to par as to what builders are offering as I don't do much business in new home sales.

Fred, it depends on the price point. Entry and mid-level homes generally have microwaves over the stove. Higher end homes may have either microwave or nice range hoods.

Range hoods are popular still, but it all depends on where the range is located.  Downdrafts are not that common.  Filters are easier to install than putting in a new roof vent!
