I am not an authority on this - however, there are many in San Jose.  Many are being considered with the City of San Jose to be included in Affordable Housing Developments. I had an hour-long discussion with a City representative about these communities several months ago. It was an eye-opening education.  

We don't have may mixed use areas.... our zoning is cut and dry.... res/comm/industrial/multi family.... I, too, enjoy working from home...but I do drop in once a week for a day...

44% of our commercial buildings in Ventura County are vacant.  The city council is still trying to ram mixed use buildings down our throats, but the people are fighting back somewhat.  It's part of a new "downtown" concept that few in the city actually want.

We're seeing a lot of that in the greater Seattle area. The difference based on what I understand you are saying is that the commercial space is owned by the developer and leased out where the residential is typically condo or town homes owned individually and not necessarily a business owner below.

When we lived in Los Angeles and had our commercial real estate practice, Santa Monica was doing that, and Sonoma (the city) had a few of these, and last time we were in Napa in Nov of  2017, I saw a few.  We have several in the downtown SB area.  A

Just coming to Oklahoma City. We have been pretty traditional and separated in development.

We live in a very successful mixed use community, Kentlands.

It seems to be working well in Chicago except for some areas pushing development envelope where the commercial lease up is lagging.

Fortunately we don't have many of them in our community.

We have very few live/work communities here and I'll bet I get at least one call/inquiry each week about them from evergreen marketing of those communities.

They are popular with our relocation clients but, sometimes lending can be an issue with them because of the commercial space. I have scoped out lenders, however, who remove that condition, as the ones we have are fabulous spaces in some of the best areas of Charlotte.

Need to convince the local City Planning ...... 

San Jose, Ca. has the very successful Santana Row. That seems to be the model being followed by many developers and cities who are to add vitality to a downtown or a neighborhood.

There are some projects in my market with mixed results (some of that is observational since I don't specifically track commercial real estate activity) .

Mixed use is doing well in Metro & Downtown John DL Arendsen Places like Little Italy, Hillcrest & North Park (urban areas) seem to do well with them. You may be well ahead of the curve in non-coastal Oceanside.

We don't have all that many of them here and I don't particularly follow them. Sorry can't be of more help.

Probably not my niche, but there are sections of Denver doing very well with mixed use.

Some areas are doing great but some downtown not so much.

Mixed use properties do well in my small community.  There has been a lot of redevelopement occuring over the last several years.  That being said, the residential units sell/rent faster than the commercial.  For commercial, my market has reached an upper threshold of what rents can be.  Some businesses are clearly not viable.  What businesses are doing well are high end retail and restaurant.
