I'm seeing a lot of this in Charlotte lately, John. For me, it's allowing the elderly to remain independent, having auxillary services available to them to maintain that independence for as long as humanly possible.

Families are moving them into their 'own space' and often on their same property to also help care for them in their later years. (ADUs come to mind!)

Quality Elder Care would have to be something that allows people to remain in their own home, or at least a home of their choosing. There are many older people who do not want to go anywhere near assisted living care, or nursing homes. They want to stay in the home they are familiar with, which is often a problem because that is no longer a safe place. I think Quality Elder Care would have to include many facets including home maintenance/rearrangement/updates, in-home health care/medical treatment, diet/exercise/nutrition assistance, social aspects/company.

I read something somewhere about a group of older ladies who purchased a home together, so they could all have their own space but have help/company/etc. I thought that was a great idea.

What Debe Maxwell, CRS said! I'm an early baby boomer (born in the 1940's) and still work 60-70 hours per week, exercise, have all my marbles, etc. Watch whom you call an elder! I believe at some point I am responsible for my own care.

My neighbors are in their late 70's and of sound mind.   They have no children or close relatives who will take care of them in their old age.  So they, like many Floridians, are planning to sell their single family house, and move into an assisted living facility.

I think about living well in later years. I like what is being offered in some of the Active Adult (55+) communities around my area- pool, hot tub, sauna, golf, community activities, etc etc.

If this isn't your speed then there is a place right in my town that is like a Country Club for Elder Care. It costs a small fortune so some people put their houses up so they can move in there. I have heard nothing but positive reviews about it though!

If you have ever toured nursing homes then you know how bad it can get. I put $100,000 into a loing term care program back when the programs were capped. This allows for home care or better facilities.

It's depressing to think about. I've got my order in .... I'm just going to croak and be done.  I'd never want what my mother lived the last 10 years of her life in a skilled nursing home.

This is a very interesting and important subject, John.  I have often thought about this because, honestly, I don't want to be living with kids... or them living with me.  My widowed girlfriends and I have talked about building a Golden Girls house.  I think to go a step further with this, caregiver quarters should be added so we can hire a live-in caregiver to look after us as needed.  It would be a helluva a lot less expensive for us to own the home and hire help than to go into an established facility with high overhead costs.

My husband and I bought our current home specifically because it had additional quarters for a live-in caregiver to help me as his Parkinsons condition advanced.  He wanted to stay home and I was commited to doing that for him... and it was so much less expensive than putting him in a home after he became bedridden.    It worked perfectly for that.  My Golden Girls house would be that on a larger scale.

I think taking over older smaller hotels or abandoned commercial space (like the old K-Mart we've had empty out here for 15 years that takes up a city block) and converting them into high-end residential care facilities is the way things will go.  Good use of the space, especially with hotels.  I know of a company or two out here that do this.

This could make people more apt to move into these facilities and free up some houses for their kids to move into or sell.

Not so sure that passing in one's home is a takeaway on property values and disclosure unless it was a violent death Tony Lewis But do enlighten me if I'm wrong. Plus, I can tell you from personal experience having had to dea with one's last days in a hospital that it can cost thousands of dollars a day and be quite devastating to the heirs or financially responsible.

Best solution would be a CARE GIVER BACKYARD HOME, or for elder affordable independence. Or you could always convert an existing room to a

JADU: Why Adopt a JADU Ordinance?

JADUs offer the simplest and most affordable housing option. They bridge the gap between a roommate and a tenant by offering an interior connection between the unit and main living area. The doors between the two spaces can be secured from both sides, allowing them to be easily privatized or incorporated back into the main living area. These units share central systems, require no fire separation, and have a basic kitchen, utilizing small plug in appliances, reducing development costs. This provides flexibility and an insurance policy in homes in case additional income or housing is needed. They present no additional stress on utility services or infrastructure because they simply repurpose spare bedrooms that do not expand the homes planned occupancy. No additional address is required on the property because an interior connection remains. By adopting a JADU ordinance, local governments can offer homeowners additional options to take advantage of underutilized space and better address its housing needs.

More opportunities for seniors to remain at home, if they choose and have that as an option, and access to all the services they need to continue living at home. The big issues are the increasing costs of these services, but even more so the cost of senior care facilities. ADUs may be a better alternative for many families because of costs.

Ideally one would be able to stay in their home until Just before the time of passing.  It would be ideal to pass away in the hospital to help the family with the property value.

It depends on each person and what their condition is. I've seen some elders fight going into assisted living, but once they are there, they find out they actually like it. The amount of care needed usually increases, to the ponit where they might need a crital care nurse 24/7, or they might get dememtia or alzheimer's, then adjustments need to be made. Quality care depends on the faciliy and the people working there that help provide the care. Family members need to visit regularly and monitor their relatives.

I read a story about an older lady who booked a long term stay on a cruise ship. It cost half the amount compared to assisted living. She gets all the meals she wants, always meets new people, gets room service, doctors on board, and sees the world. Not a bad idea!!
