Many times people use language to elevate their persona.

What are Chyrons?

No, in your example, it is trying to elevate the IQ factor of the station you are watching. Swing and a miss ....

I had to look up chyrons. So I learned something new, but it would have been better if Bauder used "Caption" or something easy to understand.

CMA, fiduciary, procuring cause, comparables - there are a lot of terms we use in the industry that most people wouldn't understand without an explanation. We should try to keep that in mind

Chyron is hardly 'a new word'.

Chyrons are when you're watching something on TV and there is a 'caption' superimposed. I've known this for decades. (NOT THE SAME AS CLOSED CAPTIONING) see example on Doug D's A . . . LOL

You've seen them for decades and decades and just didn't know 'it had a name'.

It's just an industry-specific term. And it's cool to learn new words.

I would say that speaking plainly with proper spelling is a better way to communicate.

An old guy held up the line the other day at the drugstore asking the clerk if she knew what 'entropy' was . . . and hilariously, he did not explain it accurately AT ALL. Another old guy moved him out of the way. LOL

UNNECESSARY 'big words' DO NOT ELEVATE.

It simply makes the speaker look condescending.

Condescension repels.

When you post how well educated and articulate you are, and misspell the word 'grammar' . . . well . . . (yeah, I saw that here recently . . . o.O)

KISS!

I don't believe that it elevates the speaker, Annette. How could it if it interrupts the flow of the data being passed when the listener doesn't know the term?

And, yes, we do see it in our business.

When it comes to the media, they are so far slanted left, that it is no longer news it is them broadcasting their opinion. When it comes to real estate, what i say will be geared towards who my audience is. Such as a client or just the public. I want to portray my message in a positve light which always promotes my self and or my services.

I learned a long time ago to keep the "Jargon" out of conversation (thank you Landmark).  It easily one of the top two or three things from Landmark that has most impacted my career, in both the corporate world and in real estate.  Simple explanations, in commonly understood language, makes explaining complicated problems SO much easier.  Many times in executive board meetings I'd be told "You're the first person to ever explain that in an understandable manner" which brought me a great level of respect and people stopped dreading having to hear the "IT Guy" speak.
