Your forester will

*Determine which trees should be cut.

*Mark the trees (the color does not matter, just has to be durable, bright, and specified in the contract).

*Find a logger.

*Prepare the contract between the landowner and the logger.

*Administer the sale to make sure

  *That you get paid

 *That the proper trees are cut

 *And prevent the residual forest from any unnecessary damage.

This is a great question. I've had trees cut down in the past, but have no idea what color they were marked with. I bet Bob Crane would have an intelligent answer!

Hire a professional forester to study the tree stand, to determine the what to thin out, what to keep and why. Have forested land in a family farm that has all the woodland in tree growth program. 10 year forestry plan to determine how to maximize the health of the timber. Also to meet recreational trail goals for enjoyment. Don't tie ribbons, spray a rainbow of colors and fingers crossed, hope whoever fires up the Husqvarna chain saw knows the ones you want to keep that he thought you wanted cut. I've never colored a tree to be taken down, so I'm no help in this regard, Fred. No lumberjacks on my property. Then again, I have a 3300 square foot house with a two car garage sitting on .15 of an acre. 😉

A neighbor has their's marked with orange spraypaint. 

When we have trees cut down, it's easier to mark the keepers as we usually take out 90% of what's there.  If I were marking ones to cut, I'd use orange simply because that's what we used in search & rescue to mark vehicles as it showed up well in thick brush.

Color choice is regional.  Mark them in different colors and different ways. Pink round blobs about 2"X3" or a circle around girth of smaller trees and blue x for the ones that stay. Use the cheapest paint you can find that's latex. Look in the return seconds/ paint pile at the hardware store. One Bright color that someone didn't like, or mix two you have in a 5 gallon bucket and walk with a brush taped to an old broom stick. Spray paint is more expensive.  Mark the trees below cut line so you will know if they made a mistake. You can buy flagging $1.40 for 50 foot roll and tie the ones you want to keep, and paint those to go. Speak softly to the ones you are going to remove so they don't scare the others. Mark boundry trees a third way. Keep it simple.   Some places use orange, blue, red, pink... ask the lumberjacks what is their favorite color??  Bright color is cut dull color stay because you will see the marks for two years if latex

I am a big fan of red and green,  green means go,  red means stop.  But make sure the tree cutters understand this concept.,

Here in Santa Barbara with the widening of the freeway, they marked the trees to be cut with red spray paint.  The trees to be saved, were surrounded with orange plastic fencing.  A

Pink ribbon or keepers.
Yellow ribbon for droppers.
For the keepers also stake out the perimeter of the crown.

You have to watch them. Many will cut trees you don't want cut, and many will say this or that tree got damaged when they dropped one of the bad ones, or they'll run into it with a skid loaded and damage it, or claim they had to take good trees n order to get the bad ones out, etc. I'd call your local forestry dept. I think we used orange on ours, but I like white because it shows up much better in the woods.

Orange to cut. Carmel-by-the-Sea markets itself as the City In The Forest and that's what it uses.  One time, they marked the wrong tree orange and, boy, is there controversy now that the wrong tree was cut down. 

Wow, I like if they only cut dead trees, if they are dead then the color should be yelloe.
