I was a bank manager. My bank was a victim of a hostile takeover by another bank. Lots of layoffs followed.

One of my clients, told me that, if I should get laid off, I should talk to him about a new career. He was a real estate broker and someone whom I respected.

And...here I am over 20 years later.

I was buying rental houses, back in the day when you could still find non-qualifying FHA&VA assumables for very little money out of pocket. Somehow I got the idea that having a real estate license would give me "inside knowledge".    And it did!

Richie Alan Naggar Great question.  For me the same reason I do anything, to meet girls.  I had no idea about the making money thing.

But seriously, as a title person I got my license as a learning experience to help me better relate to the agents with whom I would be doing business.  I got loan originator license for the same reason.

This Q has been asked and answered many times over the years. We had an agent in FL who basically abandoned us till it was time to get paid, also sent a KNOWN 'unstable 'buyer' ' who had cancelled 11 previous deals! And cancelled ours too. We should have been advised not to accept on those grounds, and had we known we would have saved the time.

ALSO did not communicate to our eventual buyer who was so mad he showed up at title company with keys, slammed on desk and said I'M GIVIN' IT BACK! Why? SOMEONE (the agent) DID NOT INFORM BUYER that the icemaker water line was NOT CONNECTED, he came home day 1 to a puddle! We gave title money for him to get it connected 2 days after close!

This I believe is one of the top reasons people get RE licenses - someone did not do their job properly and 'well I could probably do better' and we do!

Sadly, that agent who BTW chased my husband down AT HIS MOTHER'S FUNERAL is still in business.

Also a local broker saw me in a model telling my parents how cool the model was, peeked around the corner and said 'get a license and come work for me' LOL I never did work for her but I did serve on boards with her!

I bought into a new construction condo that cut too many corners and then was further mismanaged by the board. The board was three people- one was a real estate broker that ran a decent sized firm, the second was a real estate agent- that had no idea what he was doing (now works for a large landlord), and the third taught at any ivy league university. The 2 in the real estate profession were outvoting the professor, and making the wrong decisions in the meanwhile. The 2 real estate people later stepped down and asked me to run the building. It was the professor (and her noble prize winning economist husband in the background) and I running the building- with me taking the lead and turning the health of the building around. On the flip side of the equation- I had been working on Wall Street for many years, and all the boutique subject matter expert firms I had interest in working for were getting acquired by the giants- and I was hating the layers of management in the larger firms...so I was feeling very trapped. I had considered becoming an agent on a referral basis only (part time) while continuing in my Wall St career for years without taking action- i.e. not relying on the income- but if a friend or neighbor came to me- I had the right background to be able to help them in the process since I had served on a board and turned around the health of my building. I eventually had enough of the ridiculous requirements- and decided to become an agent full time rather than considering it in addition to my career in finance. Sadly, as a brand new agent- it was scary how low the bar is- and I started out as a newly minted agent with far greater knowledge of the business than most of the agents I came across. I connected with the right director (also a former Wall Street guy)- and ultimately I now feel at home surrounded in a firm I can truly say are my peer group.

Crazy enough, I wanted to be a Real Estate agent as young as middle school. I loved houses and thought it would be a cool job. I started out in mortgage banking which was a more secure with a salary with insurance. I moved to Real Estate after I got married and had health insurance.

I don't think most people know what's involved and how hard you work to make a living. How there's no paid vacations, no matching 401k, no matching SS, etc. I love all the people I've met and not having a "boss" but it isn't as easy to make a living as people are lead to believe.

The best agent in Southern Utah!

A few things happened to push me forward. When ready to buy, I called an agent to show me properties, he treated me like a peasant, saying my price point wasn't high enough to be worth his time.

A listing agent stood me up when I wanted to see a townhome. It was flooded when the nearby river swelled, changing course after several days of steady rain. Divine intervention, I like to think!

Finally bought my house from a FSBO, was in litigation for 8 years. Buyer beware is right!

While working as an Assistant Marketing & Advertising Director for a large, new construction company, the market went south and I became the scapegoat. Someone told me they'd hire me if I was a real estate agent.

Something clicked and here I am!

Richie Alan Naggar A long story short! I was almost on my 13th year of finishing Homeschooling my three children. I had started doing Upholstering from home, I had about five couches in my living room, tons of dining chairs to do. One of my customers asked to do some boats seats. When I delivered them to him, he said, " You should be a Realtor". He gave me the name of a local Broker. As I ponder the idea, I told my mother that I was going to be a Realtor. I had no idea how to go about it and I started my research.

One thing I found out quickly is that I needed a High School Diploma, lol. I had not finished high school, at the time, I did not have $15 to take the test. So, I quickly enrolled to take my GED. Wow, my scores were off the roof. It gave me the confidence to proceed. I did all the requirements, and the rest is history:) Katina

For me it was a second choice. I wanted to be an appraiser but was unable to have any existing appraiser mentor me as required. My buyer's agent when we met offered me a job and I decided to discuss that opportunity. So now 7 years down and entering my 8th year, I have no regrets.
