By your image below, it appears to be complicated. I leave the heating and cooling setups to my husband.

Way back in the late 70's I purchased a home with a heat pump and it was at best ok. After we sold and moved on, the new owner converted to gas. How he did it, I have no idea. Guess back then it was not what it was cracked up to be. These days, with years of progress, I have no idea.

Had a friend here install it, they hated it.  It was never warm enough or cool enough for them.  They first supplemented with gas logs and window units, but eventually replaced the system and said they would not do it again.

Hmm, I have not heard good or bad about it.  It sounds like a good thing to me, but I am not an HVAC professional.

They do work, and have been around for a very long time, not sure how long it takes to recover the expense though.

Just like any mechanical system, I am sure there are entry level, mid level, and high end. Obviously the HVAC salesman will sell you whatever you want and whatever makes them money.

Personally, if I had the funds to do it, I would probably do it, because every time my SO turns on the furnace to the level she wants, I tense up...as well as feel like my skin is going peel off.

I do love walking down in my basement in the summer. Feels wonderful.

I've only heard of them, but have never been in a house that has had them.  I can't see them being too practical in our postage stamp sized lots.

This has been around for decades. Heated floors, walls & ceilings as an option in new construction were offered but were too expensive. Only mega-bucks went with it. That's all I know Fred. Good question

It has always been of interest to me as a supplemental source Fred Griffin Florida Real Estate . The issue here is the ground freezes all the way to 6' down BUT I've been told that a totally vertical system, like a deep well, is just as effective.

I haven't seen much of it in our area. There was one development of seven or eight homes that used geothermal energy. My understanding is that they are considered very efficient.

I'm so glad I don't need any heating or cooling where I live.  But it could be a good thing for some climates, if you can afford it.

Home again, home again...

We have a very eco-friendly developer in our area who has included geo-thermal heating-cooling in his buildings, but here (in our cold region) they are not very cost-effective to build.

Off the top of my head it seems as if th expense would far outweigh the benefits of installing something like this.....especially in my area.

Fred, my brother had a geo-thermal system when he built a new home back in the late 80's and they loved it.  It was very energy efficient and they had no problems at all.  It is about twice as expensive as a good gas forced air HVAC system, but the payoff is in the cheaper energy bills in the future.  It is best used for new construction homes on a 2+ acre lot.  There is currently a 30% federal tax CREDIT on the installation of a geo-thermal system and many states offer a state credit as well.   So if on tax day today you owed Uncle Sam $8,200 and you installed a $24,000 geo-thermal system in 2024 you would only owe the IRS $1,000, after the 30% tax credit was applied!!!!

There is a catch with the tax credit as it can not be carried over in future years if it was not fully used in the first year, and the credit can not be refunded if it is larger than the tax owed.

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

Hi Fred! I've had two clients with them here in Charlotte and they vow to never use any other means of heating and cooling! They are highly efficient and seem to last forever.

The ones I've seen were all in very high end homes but, I do know that one of Charlotte's oldest, affordable condo complexes has geo-thermal installed in their complex.

What I've been told is that they are expensive to install but, so very efficient they will pay for themselves in 5-7 years. And, they last forever.
