Minot North Dakota is a community of extreems (financially) Peter Mohylsky, www.athome30a . There is a lot of wealth here due to healthcare, finance, and energy jobs YET there are many who have not been able to get in on those high paying jobs. THUS housing trends are also all over the map. I know childless couples that have mansions and I know families of six to ten (multi-generational) who live in harmony in a single wide mobile home.

The spec homes are 1800 to 2500 feet depending on the part of town.  But it's the LOT SIZES in those subdivisions.  "Postage stamp" and "Zero Lot Lines" are overstatements.

Some houses are packed so close together that you can't drive a vehicle between them.   And there is absolutely no yard (where do the children play?).

Peter Mohylsky, www.athome30a I am seeing bigger homes being built in my neighborhood. Long ago, the typical size was 1,800-2,000, now the norm is 2,400-2,800. Times have changed here in the hood.

What I see in some cases is 9 people (2 adults and 7 children)  living in a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom, 1,300 square foot home.

It's called what they can afford.

I'm always befuddled when retirees moving to our area build huge houses. Who wants to pay taxes and clean a house that big for two people, unless they're going to host huge family reunions?

In my neighborhood, we have SO many tear-downs going on and people are building monstrosities! They're gorgeous but, they dwarf our 2,000 to 3,000 SF ranches!!

A leaning toward how the space is designed. Large is out but useful, comfy is in of course more affordable. No stairs! Plenty of storage space. Backyard & more than one bath with 2 or more a plus. Location caps it all off with asking about retail, shopping, medical, FWY, schools (?), & people's personal stuff. NOTE: people in mega mansions or large homes end up living in about 3 rooms

The trend in our community remains the same.  People that can afford it buy homes with the best schools, nicest neighborhood on low traffic streets.  The proximaty to the freeway is importan as well.  People buy according to their budget.

All over the map. We live in a townhome and have single neighbors, married couples with adult children and a couple of families with 3 bedroom units who have 4 children. And, we have a 55+ neighborhood a block away with 1, 500 to 2,200 square foot single family homes in addition to 3 or 4 neighborhoods with homes 2,400 to over 3,000 square foot homes with 2 or 3 car garages.

New England housing stock were larger home. Blended families need larger homes. In The Waltons, four boys—John-Boy, Jason, Ben, and Jim-Bob—shared one bedroom, while the girls—Mary Ellen, Erin, and Elizabeth—shared another. John-Boy had his own room, so the arrangement was one room for the older boys (Jason, Ben, and Jim-Bob), one for the girls, and a separate one for John-Boy, with the parents and grandparents also having separate rooms.
  • Boys' room: Shared by Jason, Ben, and Jim-Bob. John-Boy had his own room.
  • Girls' room: Shared by Mary Ellen, Erin, and Elizabeth.
  • Parents' room: John and Olivia had their own bedroom.
  • Grandparents' room: Grandma and Grandpa Walton had their own bedroom.
  • The original Brady Bunch house was approximately 2,500 square feet, but after an expansion in 2019, the house featured in the show's renovation series is now 5,140 square feetThe larger house has five bedrooms and five bathrooms and includes a second story that was not part of the original structure, allowing for more bedrooms for the family of eight.
