LilacsIt Takes More Than April Showers...I have always loved lilacs.  However, I couldn't grow them in Southern California.  By that, I mean the lilac bushes would not flower.  When I moved to Sedona, I discovered I had flowering lilac bushes the following April.  I was so excited about this.  I didn't plant these lilacs.  They were there when we moved in.  You Need A Cold Winter For Great BloomsI am not sure where I heard that lilacs need an excellent freeze to bloom. But that is not an issue in Sedona.  We do not get days below freezing, but our weather is cold enough to allow the process to set for the next season's blooms. Lilacs are very hardy.  We had a really cold winter in 2022-23.  I didn't do anything special to protect the lilac bushes.  This year was very good for a strong f...

Happy Mother's Day!Besides spending time with friends and family,  my favorite pastime is gardening.  My lilac bushes are some of my favorite fragrant flowering plants.  More on that later in my May post. I want to wish all mothers a fabulous Mother's Day.  Enjoy your family today.  We are blessed to have this day in May when the weather is more pleasant than at other times of the year.  Get outside and smell the flowers.   Remembering our Mothers who have passed before us. SedonaAre Traffic Circles (Roundabouts) Safer and More Efficient? Coldwell Banker Realty At The "Y" Road Construction On SR 179 In 2009When the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) decided to improve SR 179, the decision to put traffic circles or roundabouts became a very local issue. Citizens were split. There were many meetings to decide the best course of action. The decision was finalized, and twelve traffic circles were put in.  Uptown 2016  - No Barriers or Traffic CirclesUptown 2023  -  With Pedestrian Barriers Just recently, two more traffic circles were added in the Uptown area, where congestion was historically an issue. What Is The Sedona Weather Like In Spring? Our First 120 Days of 2023...This shows what 6 inches of snow near the end of February 2023 looks like from my driveway…The first three months continued where the end of 2022 left off.  Sedona has had a very cold winter.  The winter (2023) brought 29.25 inches of snow through March.  There was also 14.10 inches of rain.  Needless to say, in the short term, the drought is over.  In fact, we had flooding when a warm front moved in and dropped rain which melted some of the snow in Northern AZ by Flagstaff. Tlaquepaque Bridge on SR 179 - 3/22/23 peak capacity As for the temperature ...As April 2023 came in, the weather was still pretty brisk. We were wondering if it would ever warm up. I read Kathy Streib's blog today, "Friday Fun."  "Today is "Pay It Forward Day". Kathy asked us to share the first thing that comes into our mind with an act of kindness that we personally experienced from someone. I encourage you to check it out if you haven't already.  As with most blogs, they can have us thinking about other things.  I remembered a couple of recent events that brought much joy to an aching heart.  I have not been touched in such a way in a very long time.  Kathy also shared with us a graphic, "Think Positive."  which led me to this. Don't Worry, Be Happy!"Don't worry, Be Happy...".  Well, I remember someone telling me that statement when things were not going well, and it always brought a smile and a change of demeanor. Many of us have had to manage operations or dep...

The Sphinx and Mittens in Soldiers Pass Sedona Hiking RecommendationSoldiers Pass TrailWhen hiking in Sedona, I recommend Soldiers Pass Trail.  The trail is 4.5 miles out and back from the trailhead.  I have hiked this up to the highest point. This trail connects to various other trails if you choose to make it a longer hike.  It is moderately challenging.  The elevation rises about 450 feet but is not a steep climb. The further you go in Soldiers Pass, the higher you get and the better the view.  You can also navigate to two popular sites, Devils Kitchen and The 7 Sacred Pools.  As you continue on the hike, there is a cave that is also popular. However,  I have not been to the cave. Devil's Kitchen (sinkhole image below) with the Sphinx in the background.  This sinkhole was created back...

Sedona - McDonald's "Iconic" Teal Arches Sedona, Arizona - McDonald's is famous for its branding and marketing campaigns. From Ronald McDonald and the Hamburglar to the Big Mac and Chicken McNuggets, the brand is the most identifiable for its Golden Arches. It is also the world's most recognizable fast food chain on the globe because of those arches.Sedona Community Development HistorySedona was incorporated in 1988, and it was still in the process of determining the exterior building and signage restrictions. Then along came McDonald's (circa 1992) proposing to build a restaurant. Those who know Sedona, understand that obtrusively bright and showy buildings or signage would never pass muster with the Community Development Department. First Home Buying Experience1313 Brooktree Cr.  Woodside Village West Covina CA 91792PrefaceMy story starts out of high school in the fall of 1970, when I met my future husband in college.  It was Psychology 1A.  Our professor grabbed Rick on the first day of class and grabbed him on the QT. She asked him to have an outburst while she was explaining the syllabus to the class.  He stood up and stated that what she expected out of us was outrageous and that he was going to drop this class.  He then ripped up the syllabus and stormed out.  Our professor asked us to describe what we had just witnessed.  Psych 1A was not easy, so a tutoring session was offered.  I attended and saw Rick.  Obviously, I recognized him from his performance.  So I struck up a conversation. He thought I was the tu...

Camp Verde, AZ - Montezuma's Castle got its name from early settlers in the area.  They thought that this was built by Montezuma (the Aztec mythical hero).  In fact, it was built by the Sinagua between 1100 to 1350 A.D. By 1425 A.D., the Sinagua were gone.  They were hunters and farmers.  Modern theory is they left because the natural resources became depleted.  Verde Valley residents normally think of Montezuma's Castle when cliff dwelling is mentioned. Throwback ThursdayI decided to go to my Stats page and sort posts by the number of views.  I was surprised to see the post below garner 11,182 views.  I decided to do some "Throwback Thursday" posts from years ago.  I chose this as my first one to feature. March - In Like A LION!Brutal Winter Storm in Sedona - 10-11 Inches of Snow Over 2 Days To Start March.7 inches of snow on the ruler.  This was day 2.  On March 1, we got 5 inches of wet snow starting at 5 PM. It started sticking immediately. It was amazing to see who fast it was coming down.  We have an umbrella over our BBQ because we use it all year long.  Rick had to close the umbrella because there was too much snow building up. There really wasn't much we could do for the junipers and pine trees.  The next day we saw the result of the heavy snow we got overnight.  My husband cleaned an area so he could get a measurement overnight.  There was 7 inches on March 2nd. The Japanese Maple Tree Survived! Many Trees and Bushes Crushed By Weight of SnowAn arborist is coming on Friday to see...

Snowdona! The red rocks turned crimson and white with patches of pine and juniper. It is just gorgeous outside. Fortunately, we have food for the birds and protection in the junipers for them. View From My Great RoomSedona is in Northern Arizona. One of the big differences between Flagstaff and Sedona is that the roads into Sedona do not shut down. Generally, the I-40, SR-89A, and the I-17 can close from Sedona to Flagstaff shutting down all traffic.  Above - Thunder Mountain- View from my driveway...

PrefaceI just saw an episode of "Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles".  The Altmans were deciding whether to sell their home and buy an $18 million dollar home. The home they were considering was listed by "Sellebrity" Kofi Nartey.  My eyes lit up when I saw him open the door.  It brought back a week full of memories from a class he taught in Scottsdale almost 5 years ago for the Institute for Luxury Home Marketing.  This is a blog that I published after the week-long class.  It was one of the best I had ever been at. Institute for Luxury Home MarketingThe Mission"To help the real estate professional offer superior service to affluent buyers and sellers and in so doing, maximize their own success."The Institute for Luxury Home Marketing (ILHM) is the leading authority to provide training...
