Every Spring I look forward to the wonderful events that Sonoma County offers with glee! For those of us who love to look at historical, vintage homes and gardens (GUILTY!) Spring is a treasure trove of opportunities to indulge our love of beautiful homes and charming gardens. It is always fascinating to me to see other people's living patterns. Their choices are only limited by their minds. Small, cramped dark spaces become wonderful work areas with proper lighting, plush carpeting and neatly stacked baskets and wired boxes organize much needed everyday work tools.I am always delighted by well organized  and maintained areas. Gardens, which I call "outside rooms' offer not only visual delight, especially as the most verdant season of the year unfolds, but a banquet for the other senses...

Healdsburg is a fun place. One week it might be barrel tasting along the Russian River Wine Road. Another time it might be the famous FFA parade. We manage to get through these small town treats and the start of our Farmers' Market with a fair measure of pride and joy in our small town. Coming up at the end of the month is an event to prove that our life doesn't completely revolve around wine or growing grapes and specialty vegetables. This year is the tenth anniversary of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, and there's a great lineup of music. Acts include Charles Lloyd, Zakir Hussein, Cedar Walton, Charlie Haden, Billy Hart, Joshua Redmond, George Cables, Julian Lage, Pete Escovedo, Eddie Palmieri ... and so many more! Ten great days of jazz to celebrate ten great years of jazz in Healdsbur...

We all have friends and coworkers that work hard and may never hear a word of praise or recognition. I wanted to take a minute out of my day, and yours, to send a shout of recognition to Gail Ryan of Healdsburg, California. Gail is a realtor at Healdsburg Sotheby's International Realty with superbly comprehensive knowledge of our town. She's the first to know of new listings and her brain contains histories of all the families who helped build the wine industry in Sonoma County. That's all great and by itself would make Gail a wonderful addition to any office. What sets her apart is her fierce dedication to her rental clients, both the owners and tenants. She juggles thousands of details of repairs, vacancies, and showings with an impressive combination of telephone expertise, knowledge ...

I've always liked the construction era before 1900. The country was rich with high quality lumber and many skilled builders. Combine that with automation and the wood working factories that had figured out how to create a wide variety of reasonably priced ornamentation. The result was an explosion in decoration that let builders go wild. The detail on the left features the beautifully turned center post on the porch and the resulting cornucopia of braces and trim elements that adorn the post and the beam holding up the roof and porch ceiling. You can notice in the background that the porch has a tightly constructed wooden ceiling, sadly forlorn now, but a mark of finish detail when it was built. It's so much easier to just put a roof on over the rafters of the porch and call it done. To...

Sometimes good opportunities are right in front of you but still hard to see. That's what I was thinking after I toured the Foss Creek Villas with Ed Buckner. I concentrate on Healdsburg real estate whether it's vineyard properties or Victorians on Matheson. I'll always look at properties near downtown Healdsburg since walking distance to the plaza is a great selling point. Somehow in spite of all that looking, the fact that Healdsburg has some affordable condos in walking distance to downtown just hadn't registered. I've looked at the condos at the Grove (just across the street), and they're very nicely done and brand new, but with prices starting at around $615,000 they're not a weekend getaway place for everyone. I still think they represent an excellent value, but after seeing what ...

Nothing beats a parade. Roger Peters took these pictures of Healdsburg California's 150th Birthday parade on August 18, 2007. This parade of horse drawn vehicles was a splendid small town exhibit of our farming and agricultural history.  Meanwhile, at the Healdsburg plaza, our Healdsburg Sotheby's exhibit in the Healdsburg Museum tent about the history of the Geysers was a great hit. Daniel Drew reproduced hundreds of copies of the little book telling the true story of horse drawn trips to the Geysers in 1875. I have two highlights from the book. One describes a local character, Clarke Foss, who delighted in impressing his riders with gallops and flat out runs on the way back to Calistoga from this 19th century wonder. I'm sure he actually scared the hell out of most of them. My second ...

With all the newspapers, TV News and stories on the internet in regards to what's going on in mortgage industry, sometime it might be a little scary to even think about getting a loan.  Loan programs have changed or have been entirely discontinued, everyone has heard about the sub-prime problems, in fact you may have a sub-prime loan right now as you're reading this. Mortgage companies all across the US have closed their doors. Actually, things are not as bad as they seem. There are still plenty of loan programs available to current homeowners, investors and first-time buyers. Despite what the news reports have been implying, there are actual senior loan officer's across the US, including myself,  who are reputable and are willing to take the time to talk to their clients and help them ...
