Samuel F.B. Morse Botanical Reserve Last week I hiked the Samuel F.B. Morse Botanical Reserve and although it was the easiest and quickest of all the hikes, it also provided for the most drama…more about that later. You can access the trail off of Congress Road between Bird Rock Road and Chaparral Road. There is room for about 1-2 cars off the side of the road at the trailhead. There is also a sign stating “Samuel F.B. Morse Botanical Reserve”, so it isn’t hard to miss. Right now the entrance is surrounded by some type of fern that is a very pretty shade of green. I plan on contacting someone at the Del Monte Forest Conservancy in the future to find out about what type of fern grows there as I would not mind having that in my yard as the deer apparently don’t like it. HIKING THE BLUE TRAILBlue is the color for this month’s hike in the Del Monte Forest. This hike will take you from the Equestrian Center, along Spyglass golf course, up to and beside Forest Lake, along the crest of Poppy Hills, and back down to Stevenson Drive and the Equestrian Center. I found it a very nice and well maintained trail that was fairly easy to find. There are spots where you need to look where you are going or you will end up on a connector trail and off of the blue trail. This happened to me a couple of times as I tend to be a fast walker. However, I had my map in hand and soon realized my mistake and got back on the blue trail. There are over 26 miles of trails in the Del Monte Forest available to explore on foot or horseback. Along with some good exercise you will be guaranteed dramatic ocean and/or serene golf course views no matter which trail you choose.   GREEN TRAIL PART ONE Let’s just say that the green trail is long.  Long enough that it is going to be broken down into two separate articles.   I was able to hike half of the trail with the trusty help of my sons Flynn and Declan.  We started at the equestrian center and followed the trail to Drake Road which we then walked along to Stevenson Road.  While on Drake Road Flynn and I had a nice chat with Bruce (I hope I remembered the name correctly) a neighbor who knows and enjoys the trails on his horse.  Once you cross Stevenson you want to walk across the middle of the dirt lot where the cars are parked and look for the green trail marker.  Look on the east side of Forest Lake Road and you will find the trail marker where the green trail really starts in.The trail itself goes up betw... 08/31/2015
