1 / 2 Living in Soquel, California from a Local's Perspective By: Jessica Wallace, Your Santa Cruz Realtor Soquel, California is a small coastal town located in Santa Cruz County. It is known for its picturesque scenery, friendly community, and close proximity to the beach. With a population of around 9,000 people, and it's a great place to call home for those looking for a quieter, more relaxed lifestyle. I grew up in the Soquel & Capitola area an attended local schools such as Soquel High School. One of the things I love most about living in Soquel is the sense of community. The town is small enough that you get to know your neighbors and see familiar faces around town. The local businesses also play a big role in creating a tight-knit community. Many of them are family-owned and ope...

A short sale can be an excellent solution for homeowners who need to sell, and who owe more on their homes than they are worth. In the past, it was rare for a bank or lender to accept a short sale. Today, however, due to overwhelming market changes, banks and lenders have become much more negotiable when it comes to these transactions. Recent changes in corporate policy and the Obama administration have also improved the chances of getting a short sale approved. But to be technical, here's a more official definition: A homeowner is 'short' when the amount owed on his/her property is higher than current market value. A short sale occurs when a negotiation is entered into with the homeowner's mortgage company (or companies) to accept less than the full balance of the loan at closing. A b...

Town and Country Living in Soquel, CA Where you can buy allot more home and land for the money, SeeSandy4Homes Soquel (pronounced so-kel) is a Costanoan Indian word for "Place of the Willows", but one local tale of its name comes from a story in which a bartender yells, "Soak Hell" at a patron.  Although now geographically divided by Highway 1, the town of Soquel and the City of Capitola share a common path of the river flowing to the sea. “Soquel” is a little bit country with horses and ranches, hillsides and rivers while “Capitola by the Sea” has beaches, surfing, and boating, sailing, fishing.  Soquel has a lot of antique country stores and Soquel High School is on the hill side just above the town. The Main Street Elementary School has two buildings the one that I sent both of my ch...

Home Prices in Soquel, CA - Real Estate Market Trends in 2009 In response to the many inquiries I received after my posting about Santa Cruz Home Prices for more detailed information about specific areas in Santa Cruz County I will be writing a series of posts about home prices in the various areas in Santa Cruz County. Soquel is a small area in Santa Cruz County of about 1.1 square miles.  It has a quaint main street with antique shops and good restaurants.  Some of my favorites are Tortilla Flats and Michael's on Main.  As of the 2000 census there was just over 5000 people residing in Soquel.  There is not a huge volume of sales in Soquel since it is such a small area so home prices can vary widely month to month.   Let's take a look at the median home price trends in 2009 in Soquel. ...

Here are some facts I found interesting about the district of Soquel: Rumor has it that Mission records indicate an alternative for the Native American name for, "Shoquel" was "Osocales" Soquel Creek was originally Soquel River (I will write more about this in future blogs) Charles Darkey Parkhurst (upon death discovered to be CharlotteParkhurst) may have been the fist woman to cast a vote for President in 1868 at Tom Mann's hotel (if you know the exact location of this hotel, please email or call me) Edward Porter was "Soquel's first merchandiser." Ned Porter's store reportedly sold "groceries, drygoods, and hardware with hard liquor a sideline." The source of this quote (noted below) says the store was located where "Angell's store is today," but since the book was written in 1941, I ...

Soquel is a cute little "district" in Santa Cruz County, bordering the sea-side village of Capitola. Capitola itself used to be part of Soquel Landing. As a student of local history, I am forever trying to figure out how things used to look - how various buildings were layed out on streets. Soquel Elementary School (previously Soquel Grammar School) is a case in point. It evidently was first established across the street from where it is now (which is on the East side of Porter St. in Soquel). Designed by famous architect, W.H. Weeks in the Spanish Colonial Revival style (as so many other schools and libraries of the times were designed), the building is a rare reminder of the architectural thought and detail that went into buildings of the past. I often wonder why modern architects don'...
