The Colbert, GA Independence Day Celebration 2011 is scheduled to take place this Saturday on July 2, 2011 in downtown Colbert due to July 4th being on a Monday this year. The parade will begin at 9am again this year, in an attempt to beat the heat! As always, there will be a crafts festival, great music, and fabulous food available. Colbert, Ga (pronounced call-bert) is a small town in Madison County,about 11 miles from downtown Athens. The  incorporated town itself is small with a population of less than 600, with an area of less than 1 square mile. However, the Colbert, Ga zip code, 30628, covers a much larger area, almost 45 square miles, including parts of adjacent Oglethorpe County with a population of over 5200. The old railway passenger station is still in use today. It no longer serves as a platform for passengers to embark onto or disembark off of trains but is used for community functions. A caboose from the old Seaboard Coast Line stands in a small park next door to the old station.The old freight terminal is now a local pharmacy.
