Walking around historic Ellicott City, you'll surely pass by this brick home just off Main Street and next to the Manor Hill Tavern. Ca. 1842, this historic home is known as the Day-O'Neal-French house, named after its first three consecutive residents. John Day bought the land from George Ellicott - one of the three Ellicott brothers who settled the land in the area - for $250. A master stone mason, Day opted to build a brick home, although many of the properties on Ellicott's land were built with stone, brick was a cheaper resource. The Day-O'Neal-French House is a three-story, three-bay by two-bay federal-style structure with a rubble stone foundation, a gable roof with a brick fireplace on each end, a bit less than 1,500 square feet, and three bedrooms. It has a little courtyard out...

''Dear Birchmede Dr., We've lived with you for 23 years. Children grew up and several pet generations called you home during that time. We loved watching the birds out your bay window and the butterfly garden. The fireplace has been a great asset through past winters.  You happily accepted all the games when we gave you a facelift and added all the storage and a window seat in the family room. We love your backyard, especially the wonderful creek that is fun to explore from our yard. We love how close you were to essential shopping and how we used to ride bikes to Music and Arts for music lessons.  We loved working from home at the quirky Tudor bar in your basement. We love all the quiet places to hide with a book to read in peace.  We've loved sharing our lives with you and hope you t...

I am working with a mother and daughter who will be sharing a home. It will take a village to find this unique property, and we could use your help. Here is what we are looking for: It can be any style, in or around Baltimore, concentrating on Ellicott City in zip codes 21042 and 21163. However, for the right home, we are open to other areas., They want to purchase a large single-family home with plenty of trees, privacy, and space for a master gardener. Privacy from other houses, no fences, and a stream would be nice. One to two acres would be ideal or adjacent to open land that gives the same feeling of privacy. And a pool is a  must, indoor, outdoor, or the room to build one.A few more desires include a first-floor primary bedroom, bath, and a pet-friendly neighborhood. A couple of bo...

There's no question, the best place for sushi in Howard County, MD is UMI Sushi right on Main Street in Ellicott City!I like to take my assistants out for a special dinner after (especially challenging but rewarding) transactions, and last week we stopped by UMI Sushi! We didn't make reservations, thinking we would arrive early enough on a weekday, but UMI was packed. There was immediate availability inside but if you go to UMI during the summer months, you have to sit outside and enjoy their lovely patio with views of the Tiber stream.  UMI's sushi is melt-in-your-mouth good, and super fresh (they gut and prepare the salmon themselves, every morning). Quality is consistent, I have never left UMI's feeling anything but happy, satisfied, and full (mixed with a bit of regret that the dinn...

This week's charming home is a condo that used to be a classroom in historic Ellicott City - a home that I just helped my client buy. This is a story of a perfect match, things that are just meant to be, the law of attraction and the happiest of endings, or new beginnings. More about that another time though because today, it's all about the condo that used to be a classroom! The Greystone, also known as the Schoolhouse among the locals, dates back to the first half of the 19th century, and was built to house an academy for men. It later became Rock Hill College and then an Elementary and High School for Ellicott City. The stone building with its 18 inch thick walls sourced from the local quarry burned out twice. After the second time, the shell reigned eerily above Main Street for about...

Yesterday was a glorious Spring day. The sun was out until late afternoon and it was warm enough to leave the sweater at home. It was the perfect excuse - not that we really needed one - to head to our most favorite ice cream location in Ellicott City's historic district. Park Ridge Creamery opened their windows for the season and lots of Main Street visitors took advantage of it. If you are familiar with Ellicott City's history and the devastation the two flooding events in 2016 & 2018 have caused, seeing Old Town bustling with activity is simply a beautiful sight! If there's one small town USA that deserves all the love and support, Ellicott City is it - Gorden Ramsay very much agreed, by the way! That would be another excuse - if you, or I, really needed one - to head to Main Street a...

If you own a home in Oella/Ellicott City and are considering selling this Spring, I may already have the perfect buyer for you! Charming home wanted in Historic Ellicott City/Historic Oella District: condo, duplex or cozy single family home 1 to 2 bedrooms  original details or loads of charm preferred parking for at least 1 car (on-street, off-street, or garage) storage space for bikes My buyer fell in love with the area when he toured the apartments at Oella Mill. But since he's already envisioning himself becoming a regular at Georgia Grace Cafe (the best crepes!), treating himself at the Park Ridge Creamery (the best ice-cream!), and meeting up with friends at any of the charming pubs and restaurants that line Ellicott City's historic Main Street, he'd much rather find a permanent ho...

The new EC Diner delivers big. Literally! Their Crazy Milkshakes are out of this world. The new EC Diner just opened its doors in July 2020, and word is already traveling around town, Howard County and beyond that they are serving up sundaes of epic proportions, a family sized version, perfect for sharing. Indulgers beware (or prepare). The EC Diner is calling them Crazy Milkshakes... which is not an exaggeration: THE OREO SHAKENutella frosting inside the glass and on the rim, rolled over chunks of Oreo cookies, filled with Oreo vanilla ice cream milkshake, topped with whipped cream, chucks of Oreo cookies, chocolate chip ice cream sandwich, drizzled with chocolate syrup and whole Oreo cookies Just to give you an example. That is crazy alright! But special occasions call for special tre...
