One of my favorite coffee shops in Howard County, MD is Roggenart, European Bakery Bistro & Cafe. They have 3 locations in the county, Ellicott City, Columbia, and in Savage at the entrance of the historic mill. The latter is my go-to place because the ambiance is cozy and reminds me most of a little cafe in Europe. So when I need a latte fix or my heart is a little heavy with a bout of homesickness, I am headed to Savage Mill to spend some time at Roggenart. It always does the trick. Roggenart serves up the most delicious lattes, any flavor combination you can possibly imagine, and always has quite a selection of yummy pastries and quiches. Walking around historic Ellicott City, you'll surely pass by this brick home just off Main Street and next to the Manor Hill Tavern. Ca. 1842, this historic home is known as the Day-O'Neal-French house, named after its first three consecutive residents. John Day bought the land from George Ellicott - one of the three Ellicott brothers who settled the land in the area - for $250. The Savage Mill historic district includes the former cotton mill which was transformed into a vibrant shopping and entertainment district and is also home to many small (artsy) businesses as well as the housing that was built for its workers. Besides bungalows and colonials, you'll find several charming brick duplexes which originally comprised two floors plus a cellar, two bedrooms, and one bathroom on approximately 1,000 square feet. Many of these duplexes built in the early 1900s have been expanded over the years. There seems to be something in the water. Within the last couple of weeks, I've heard from two other people - besides myself - who received unusually high water bills.
