A Reminder of Why We Love Winter in the Northwoods! Though the temps were hovering in the teens when we packed up and headed toward Wisconsin this weekend, we did get one more reminder of why we love to plan our Northwoods projects in the Winter. While stopping at the Effie Café for a little coffee and pie, we saw a couple of Minnesota’s state birds hovering around just waiting for the many people who come up here during the summer to enjoy some of those 10,000 lakes and other bodies of water that we prefer to deal with while the water is frozen.

Good Coffee, Good Food, and Really Great Service at the Coffee Landing Café Last week I called a friend and client of ours in International Falls Minnesota who I had not seen in a while and suggested that we get together while I was in town. He suggested the Coffee Landing Café, though he had not been there yet, he had heard good things. It was good touching base with Tim, and he was right it was a very nice place for coffee and a visit. Since then I have been back just about every day that I am in town. One day while finishing up my lunch, the fellow who does the roasting of the beans started up his activities and allowed me to take a few pictures of the operation. Other days I have met with a few very interesting local personalities that made my day with interesting stories and jokes...

Jack is Not a Breakfast Food I ran into a fellow named Thor today who manages the airport in International Falls. After exchanging hugs and kisses with Jack, he told me how many problems sled dog kennels are having with Canis Lupus. He said sled dogs are a wolf's favorite food. I told him that I am holding tight and keeping an eye on Jack, I did not get a chance to tell him that I had already written a blog on the topic a few days ago; (Keep an eye on your Dogs while traveling in Northern Wolf Country).   Jack will continue to be attached to the leash which is securely hooked to my belt when ever he leaves the truck.

Keep an eye on your Dogs while traveling in Northern Wolf Country. As many of you know we have been working in and camping in some fairly intense Wolf country this winter and of course keeping an eye on the dogs. Drake had to stay home at the office, but Jack got to come along. The one condition that Jack had to agree to before joining the expedition, was to keep his safety leash on at all times and stick close to me.   Here is a post from the past that will explain a bit about why this is so important.     Keep an eye on your Dogs when traveling in Northern Wisconsin Wolf Country.   At least 24 dogs were killed by Wolves in the third quarter of this year.   And so far in the fourth quarter a pet German short haired pointer was killed in her owner's yard in Ashland County.   Of course t...

Lonely Outpost in the Wilderness I sent my camera along with Nick yesterday as he was cruising some timber along the Canadian border. Expecting him to get some nice vista shots across the Rainy River into Canada, instead he returned with a couple dozen pics of trees, trails and other interesting sights. This one caught my eye as I wondered what a Border Patrol or RCMP Officer would have to do to get assigned to this lonely outpost with temps nearly 30 below and windchills compounding this.
