I represent tax payers in the Greater Saint Louis area and the State of Missouri that have outstanding tax issues whether they are unfiled returns, back taxes and wage garnishments.Indications from IRS personel are that due to realignment within the IRS there is going to be special emphazise in pursuing over 9 million taxpayers who have not filed there taxes. No doubt the pandemic hasn't helped however that will not be an excuse not to have filed prior to the Covid 19 crises. Many individuals and organizations feel by not filing they won't be found out about. Years ago there was some truth to that because of technology. Today with artificial intelligence the IRS is taking advanage of updated in house programs like the matching program where 1099's and W2 are reported each year. Just toda...

I represent tax payers in the greater St. Louis area, the State of Missouri and nationwide who have IRS and state tax issues. As we move into the initial stages of reopening the rules continue to change regarding how and when loan forgivness will be considered. Since there are many questions to be answers I thought I would provide a summary of what's going on right now. As of Friday the May 29th there is still a large amount of money available to be lent. Reports of up to 138 billion available seems to be an accurate number according to the Journal of Accountancy as of May 23. If you have not applied there is still ample opportunity to get some of the money. Now is the time to do it, so don't hesitate. The House of Respresentives passed a bill that will make it easier to obtain a PPP lo...

I represent taxpayers in the greater Saint Louis area, the state of Missouri and by being admitted to practice before the IRS can represent tax payers nationwide. Recently the IRS has stepped up there audit activity simply by contesting simple tax returns. One of the strategies that I have seen just in the last couple of weeks is questioning entries on tax returns by requesting supporting information. One tax payer who had prepared there own tax return contacted me regarding self employment deductions on there scheldule C. What I found interesting is that after reviewing the letter and the return the IRS hadn't bothered to even look at the scheldule on the return. The letter that the taxpayer had receieved is letter 12 C. Had the taxpayer ignored the letter those deductions would have be...

I represent companies and individuals in St. Louis, surrounding areas and the State of Missouri. If you are on extension the time to file is getting closer and closer. If you are married you have two filing status choices. Married Filing Jointly and Married Filing Separately. Most married couples filing jointly because it is easlier and you are eligible for more tax deductions and credits eventhough the tax reform bill has changed some of that.If either spouse owes back taxes regardless whether Federal or State or is behind on child support or those nagging student loans that seem to never go away the IRS can offset your joint tax refund to pay off your tax debt or other obligations. If you are aware of these issues filing seperatly might be the way to go. When filing Married Filing Joi...

I represent taxpayers in the greater St. Louis area and the state of Missouri. If your tax bill is out of sight and you see no way to pay the IRS is probably breathing down your back. At this point in time, you must consider your options for how to reduce or elimate your tax bill. If your thinking bankrupcy is the solution you have to be aware of it's limitations. Tax debts are hard to discharge in bankrupcy as many of them stay with you even after the bankrupcy has been discharged by the  bankrupcy court. The IRS provides you four avenues of relief to help you get rid of tax debt. Depending on your circumstances it's possible some of these IRS methods could rid you of your tax nightmare. The best bill collector in the country is the IRS. It has tools and programs at there disposal that n...

I represent taxpayers in the greater St. Louis area and the state of Missouri. New IRS leadership is intent on narrowing the tax gap and audits on are the rise. Most audits these days are being done by mail instead of a live person. Hence a correpondence audit to the return based on the discrepancy. Are you really being auditied. No. These are proposed changes. Still time to act. The IRS gives you a response date. The CP 2000 serves as both an intial request for infomation and proposing the change in the tax. What do you do? Commuicate with the IRS. You have 30 days to agree or disagree. If you ignore the IRS they will make the changes to the return. If you don't reply you are sent a Statutory Notice of  Deficiency which is the 90 day letter. After the 90 days you can't request an appeal...

I represent tax payers in the greater St. Louis area and the state of Missouri. Perhaps you know of someone that is on IRS's radar as a result of non filed tax returns or has a balance due from previous years. Fear of the unknown when you have IRS problems causes sleepness nights.  So how do you know you are in IRS Collections? The following letters indicate it is time to get serious about your taxes. Before I get to the letters if you owe the IRS there is already a tax lien against them and all there assets including future assets acquired. This is known as the silent lien. It is automatic by statute if a tax liability has been assessed.CP 501: This is a balance due letter. This is a friendly reminder it's time to pay.CP 503: Second request for balance due. You have 10 calendar days fro...
