They say that variety is the spice of life.  That is true in most aspects of your life here in the Westfield community.  Studies show that exercising moderately at least three times a week can reap massive benefits for your body and mind.  Westfield Y improvements have begun to ensure that a wider variety of people can add more pep to their step no matter what their physical condition may be. The Westfield Y's roots hail as far back as 1868.  Since then, the organization has grown from a small social group into a large meeting area and fitness center for the Westfield community.  The current building located at 220 Clark St began their first phase of Westfield Y improvements by widening the handicap access ramp and creating elevator service all the way up to the third floor.  This give...

Halloween is finally here!  Thousands of little hobgoblins will be roaming the streets tonight, begging for candy.  Now is a good time to go over Police Chief David Wayman's Westfield Halloween Safety Tips. It is highly recommended that trick-or-treaters in the Westfield community go out in groups rather than individually.  The saying "there is safety in numbers" is absolutely true.  With larger groups, having two or three parents along makes it easier to manage.  Make sure at least one person has a fully charged cell phone before embarking on the night's adventures.  You want to make sure you can call for help if you find yourself in the midst of an emergency.  Program the Westfield Police Department's non-emergency phone number (908-789-4000) into your phone in case you need it. If p...

NJ Monthly Magazine publishes a biannual report, ranking the 339 high schools in the most educated state in the U.S.A. Westfield High School has leapt up to #21 in their idiocyncratic rating system.  We are very satisfied customers of Westfield schools K-12.  I feel our 2 children have been exquisitely well served by our system. So why the jump?  I attribute it to the magazine's tinkering with their measurement methods, which are now more intensely focused on college preparedness.  Frankly, that is what our high school feels itself to be all about. Our high achieving schools, retail and restaurant rich downtown, leafy streets lined with pleasing houses, great commutes and recreation opportunities make Westfield a coveted hometown. Here's a link to the article!

When we moved here in 2002, our girls were entering 1st and 4th grades.  I called the school in August to enroll them.  The secretary said “bring the girls—we will find a teacher in the building to give them a tour”  And they did!  Then 3-4 days later our 1st grader got a letter from South Carolina saying “Dear Geneva, I am Mrs. Joyce, your first grade teacher.  I am in SC waiting for my daughter to have her baby—can’t wait to meet you in September!”  In February, the 4th Grader, who was a theatrical phenom, was playing in Jane Eyre the Musical a half hour from Westfield.  Her teacher Mrs. McClelland and some buddies trekked out to Piscataway to see her.    Last year our 1st grader was finally a junior, and we sat with her and her guidance counsellor, Andrew Buckner, to game out her s...
