The Village of Tarrytown is urging the State of New York to consider rehabbing the Tappan Zee Bridge instead of replacing it... especially since the planned new 5.2 billion replacement would not even offer Bus or Rail Transit services. Spending that amount of money on a new bridge concept that does not incorporate a meaningful mass transit component makes no sense whatsoever... by the time this new bridge would be completed it be completely outdated. On the other hand, it would be way faster aand cost way less to reconfigure, rehab and update the aging span and it would also have much less of an environmental impact on the area. In addition, you could very easily spend some of the cost savings on a rapid bus transit component that could tie in with the Metro North Station in Tarrytown. ...

This is my second installment on Small Business Saturday.  Small businesses are the bedrock of our community and I’m thrilled to see that the small brick and mortars are getting some attention because Black Friday has largely become a big-box affair.   To see my first entry on small businesses  in White Plains  NY click here. You will also find more information about why small business is so important to a community.   Marie Graham also wrote a very eloquent post about the value of small business and why we should skip Black Friday and make Small Business Saturday rock.   Here are a few picks for the village of Tarrytown.   in general  Tarrytown NY has done a good job of keeping their small brick and mortars  as a dominant feature.  As a result it is a very unique village with a great d...

Hudson  Harbor – Tarrytown NY The last time I updated my blog on Hudson Harbor of Tarrytown NY,  Phase I townhouse sales were in full swing and the Phase II condominiums were just starting to get underway.  With Phase II now in full swing,   it is high time I updated the information on this amazing development. Hudson Harbor  is located right on the Hudson River against a major portion of the Westchester’s Hudson River Walk -A trail  which will ultimately  extend the length of the county along the Hudson River when completed.  This development is a combination of luxury townhomes as well as condominium flats. Interspersed between the town homes will sit a complete community including shops and dining – creating  complete mini-community on the Hudson River.  Included in this package ...

Every once in a while I get an opportunity.  I was supposed to be working into the evening on Saturday, but a last minute cancellation freed me up unexpectedly.  So I decided to enjoy the last afternoon of daylight savings at the Rockefeller Preserve with Jade & Tundra in tow.  We had a nice walk around Swan Lake.  I was trying to take photos with two dogs on leashes….to say this looked clumsy was an understatement.  But I did get a couple of nice pictures that I decided to post right here.  I loved the way the fall colors reflected off of the water as the ducks went about their business.  They are obviously busily preparing themselves for the winter season ahead.   The duck population was hard at work preparing for the cold months ahead.   This Mallard was “making tracks” or “waves” in...

"Tarrytown's River Walk Park" has been completed and was officially dedicated recently. The park is an important segment of Westchester County's 51.5 mile long "Westchester County River Walk" which starts in Yonkers and ends in Peekskill.  Almost 33 miles of the scenic walk and bike way along the Hudson River shores are now completed. Tarrytown's River Walk Park will be another exciting destination for people seeking recreation and relaxation. Pedestrians and cyclists will have chances for social activities, including taking advantage of a number of outdoor "garden rooms" along the esplanade. Grass terraces and lawns in the park's center allow for sitting, lounging, picnicking, informal games, and viewing the majestic Hudson River and it's banks as well as the Tappan Zee bridge and the ...

A brief bout of flu has kept me from blogging.  But a few days ago I mentioned how stormy the weather has been.  Well sometimes stormy skies can have an eerie beauty about them.  So when I saw this kind of surreal light over a cloudy sky along the Tarrytown lakes – I stopped my car and took a couple of photos.  Here is one of them.  You really see the clouds almost rolling in and the sun TRYING to peak through. © 2011 – Ruthmarie G. Ok – I like taking photos – I admit it…Any excuse to photograph towns and villages in the area will do. One of the most picturesque towns in Westchester is Tarrytown NY.  Many people fall in love with this town because of its central location and unique character.   With respect to location, it doesn’t get any better than this!  Located right on the Hudson River, an amazing sunset is served up every single night!   Futher, Tarrytown is an express stop along the Hudson Line.  Just 35 minute to Grand Central Station and you are in midtown Manhattan.   With I-287, I-87 and the Tappan Zee Bridge – Tarrytown is situated  for easy access to areas like White Plains and New Jersey making a commute either east or west and across the Hudson very easy to deal with.  North to south there is the Saw...

Although I often talk about merchants in Westchester NY, I don’t often discuss specific products found in these stores. But being a dog owner with two Siberian Huskies and a Siberain/Cattle Dog mix, I am in a good position to be judging the quality of dog beds.  So I can say with total confidence that I found the best dog bed EVER at Bark & Meow in Tarrytown NY.   For much of my adult life,  I have been seeking the perfect dog bed that doesn’t get frayed, torn, chewed or otherwise destroyed within the first three months of use.  Maybe its because my dogs are particularly ingenious – but they seem to have learned how to find and exploit any weakness in the dog beds that I have fed given them in the past.  Though it is true that active dogs are tough on their beds, my guys quite literally...

I was at a concert in Tarrytown, New York Saturday night(Guns of Hammer performing Led Zeppelin) and I thought   I’d take some pictures of Main Street. Now we’ve lived in Westchester for 15 years and I have been to this theater numerous times but never took pic’s! We ate at the Tarry Tavern, went to the concert, and had a drink at the local casual bar called SetBack Inn (Main Street Sweets ice cream was closed).   After coming home and looking at the pictures, I  realized that this is like many of the small towns we’ve visited and took pictures over the last 23 years, and it was right in my backyard! Over the next few weeks I'll be taking pictures of the towns and villages that comprise lower Westchester County, NY. The "river towns" all have a similar feeling to Tarrytown, with views o...

One of our key strategies for the past 2 years has been to improve repeat and referral business.  There are many tactics that we are employing to achieve that end (including good customer service, good workmanship, small thank you gifts, etc). But, one of the more creative and unique ways we've found to stay top of mind..later...is to send our customers a card at their one year anniversary.  The card says, "Happy Birthday to your floors."  It's a nice way to stay in touch with our customers - one year later - and it's unexpected and cute/funny, so it seems to grab people's attention.  The card thanks them for their business and has our contact info, but it is a soft sell, so there is no "please call us when you are ready for your next project" or "please refer us to your friends"  Howev...
