Small town fun in Brownsville, Oregon Friday I had the pleasure of spending time with 3 very close friends in Brownsville, Oregon, a bustling town of around 1600 occupants.  We spent some time in the Linn County Museum, visited the few shops on Main Street and had lunch at Bella Cuciana's.  Of course the Pioneer Picnic started that same day, so we took in a few activities there too.  We just caught the tail end of the Kiddie Parade, sorry we missed that.  Looked like the kids put a lot of effort into their displays.   I had so much fun in that little town that I went back Saturday with my husband and daughter.  We caught the main parade at 10am, checked out the town and then headed to the Pioneer Picnic.  I understand the Picnic has been held since 1887 and started out as a reunion for ...

Beginning in the rich farmland of the Willamette Valley, this 66 mile route then winds along rushing streams and through thick forests, climbing into the West Cascades and McKenzie Pass, and joins the McKenzie Pass- Santiam Pass National Scenic Byway. Much of the Byway parallels the Santiam Wagon Road, and this road was built to lead livestock ranchers east to pasture lands in Central Oregon, as well as to gold mines in Eastern Oregon and Idaho. The Byway begins on Interstate 5. Moving East from Interstate 5, you'll first come to Brownsville Oregon, which was settled in 1846 and is Oregon's third oldest town. To learn more about the historic Scenic Byway Tour, you can visit these websites: http://www.brownsvilleoregon.org/http://www.sweethomeoregon.org/home.cfm?dir_cat=32896http://www.t...

A Brief History of Brownsville Brownsville is located in Linn County , between Albany and Eugene off of Interstate 5 , along  Calapooia River on the edge of the Willamette Valley. Named for Hugh L. Brown, Brownsville, one of Oregon's early settlements, had its beginnings in 1846, when a group of families including the Kirks, Browns and Blakelys, came west on the Oregon Trail and continued south to claim land in the lush valley of the Calapooia. Alexander and Sarah Kirk established a small, hand-hauled ferry across the Calapooia River the following year. Travelers on the east side Territorial Road used the ferry during the deep water periods, and the place became known as "Calapooya" or simply "Kirk's Ferry". Kirk's ferry operated until 1853, when a covered bridge was built over the Cala...
