A recent trip to Columbia, Pennsylvania introduced me to a town with many well-preserved buildings.  Above is Wright's Ferry (the original name of the town) Mansion, built in 1738. What you can't see in the picture is the exquisite interior, which is approriately furnished with many 18th century pieces which belonged to the Wright family (no photos allowed). Susanna Wright's father established a ferry across the Susquehanna River, which was once visible from the house. After her father's death, this enterprising woman raised silkworms (on her windowsill no less) and had a thriving business producing fine silk.             In 1788 Wright had the town laid out with 160 building lots, and named the town Columbia, in hopes that with George Washington's support, it would be named th...

On a windy late November day, I passed over the Chickies Hill between Marietta and Columbia, PA.  Shortly before Columbia, I stopped at the Breezy View Overlook.       Just off Pennsylvania Route 441, the Overlook offers a spectacular view of the Susquehanna River."Breezy View" was an understatement on this windy November day - I had to stay away from the edge to make sure the wind wouldn't blow me over the precipice, which is steeper than it looks in the photograph!                                 The Susquehanna Heritage Trail runs along the overlook.                      A picnic area serves as a pleasant place for a repast in warmer weather.Copyright2007BrianSchulman©Brian Schulman offers expert real estate consultation and services in Lancaster County, PA.  To contact him, visit ht...

Columbia Mayor Leo Lutz announced Oct. 8th that the "Little Prince Silk Mill" site on north 3rd Street has been sold to a Harrisburg-based developer who will attempt to build a "destination business" at the dilapidated site.  The very large building, near to route 30 and clearly visible from major byways, was purchased by Columbia Borough for $825,000 in 2005 with the hopes of reselling it to a hotel chain.  It's a real mess, with crumbling walls and falling bricks - the property is surrounded by a chain link fence to protect passerby.Columbia borough officials were pleased with the sale, which allows them to right to approve what is eventually placed at the site.  Councilpeople commented that the project would bring many new jobs to the town, which sits astride the Susquehanna River an...

The Susquehanna River at Columbia, PA The Susquehanna River has always been a landmark of Central Pennsylvania.  The river's name is said to have come from a native American word meaning "muddy current".  200 years ago, trees shipped down from the virgin forests around Williamsport, on the West Branch of the Susquehanna in North Central PA,  helped to fuel a thriving lumber and building industry along the river towns in Lancaster County. In the 1820s, canals were built along the Susquehanna, further enabling river towns like Columbia and Marietta to grow.                           In the second half of the 1800s, railroads continued the progress of the river towns, but the river remained a central part of the economy. Columbia today is the largest borough between the state capitol at Ha...

Columbia, PA Bridge Bust Saturday, October sixth, a glorious day in the annals of weather history, was the date of the annual Columbia, PA Bridge Bust. The historic Old Bridge over the Susquehanna River was entirely closed off to traffic between Columbia and Wrightsville.                         The bridge, built in 1930 as a memorial to the sons and daughters of Lancaster and York Counties who served in the wars of their country, is a graceful deco art arched concrete structure. The entire span, over a mile across, was taken over by gaily decorated tents and concessions selling and displaying art, crafts, antiques, food - plus local businesses and organizations.                       I walked across the entire span from Lancaster County to York County.  As the blazing sun beat down, it...

Chickies Rock County Park, Columbia PA Located on Chickies Hill between Marietta and Columbia, PA, Chickies Rock County Park offers some of the most spectacular views of the Susquehanna River available anywhere in the Susquehanna Valley. Located off Route 441, the park starts with a parking area.                                          Walking trails meander west toward the river... Although the river can be seen from Columbia, it's farther away from Route 441 than it appears.  The hike to the overlooks is a little over a mile, uphill but not too difficult.  After you break through the woods, the trail opens wider.                                 When you get near the river, the terrain suddenly shifts steeply downhill.  Although there are barriers on the Chickies Rock ledge, caution i...

Churches of Columbia, PA Columbia, PA is known for its historic architecture.  Located along the Susquehanna River, it became a canal shipping center in the 1840s. Later in the 1800s, Columbia was a thriving railroad town.  The wealth that was created in Columbia led to the building of many significant historic homes, a large number of which still exist. This architectural exuberance was reflected as well in the churches of Columbia.  Below is a mural on the Holy Trinity Parish Center. The dignified Holy Trinity Catholic Church sits across from the parish center.                      Saint Johns Evangelical Lutheran is a landmark of Gothic architecture at Locust and Fourth Streets.                                          The Columbia United Methodist Church is a familiar sight on Fourt...

I thought I'd post some photos of wonderful homes along Columbia PA's Locust street.  These are only a sample; you'll have to drive over to see the whole review of homes - it's worth the trip! Almost every architectual style is represented here, from Victorian through Contemporary.   Columbia began life in 1726 as the first European settlers arrived, fifty years before the Revolutionary War.  It was originally called Wright's Ferry, named after John Wright who started his cross-river ferry in 1730 and lived in then-palatial mansion near the water.  Back then, Wrights Ferry was literally on the edge of civilization for the English colonies.  Interestingly, in 1789 it was proposed to bring the new national capital here.  That would be been interesting! In the 1840s and 50s Columbia became...
