OK, it’s been great having temperatures in the 50’s this winter. But when it gets below 30 degrees and the wind blows so hard it keeps me awake at night, I need some respite for my weary mind. So I take myself back to Longwood Gardens in nearby Kennett Square, PA and recall the gorgeous orchids on display in the conservatory in the past.    I know it’s orchid time again, but until I can get myself over there (waiting for a warm and sunny day when the long walk from the visitors’ center won’t freeze my nose off), I will bask in the glory of these orchid photos I took a couple of years ago.

Once a year, the Kennett Amateur Theatrical Society (KATS) presents "a pantomime in the British tradition." This means the "dame" is played by a man, the "principal boy" is played by a young woman, and a friendly animal or two are played by, in this case, two girls playing the front and back of a cow. This is the eleventh year of this madness, begun by imports from England who also imported silly songs, silly jokes, and lots of audience participation. I love to go to the Saturday matinee performance (there is also one Friday night and Saturday night) where there are lots of children in the audience. This year, one of my friends brought eight year old twin grandchildren, and we sat in the front row. What a hoot! The kids loved it, especially Frankie, who said it was the best play he had ...

The temperatures have turned cold  but there's a warm welcome in the galleries, shops, and restaurants of Historic Kennett Square.  Many businesses are open late on First Friday, this Friday, January 6th 6-9 p.m  and offer special exhibits, light refreshments, and good company.  Some of the activities happening "around the Square" include:     THE PAPER MARKET ECO BOUTIQUE  at 106 West State Street announces a showing of mixed media, watercolors and oil pastels by Unionville artist Charlene Thomforde.  They will offer light refreshments throughout the evening.   BYRSA BISTRO at 102 East State Street will have live music on First Friday and is introducing a new chef's specialty.   THE CENTRE FOR VIBRANT LIVING at 115 Marshall Street (behind the post office & library) presents a photograp...

Since our market includes the adjoining state of Pennsylvania, it is interesting to look at the market report for Southern Chester County and compare it to New Castle County, Delaware. While new listings in NCCo were down for the year 13%, Chester County new listings were down only 3%. For 2011, Closed sales  in Delaware were up almost 3%, while the total up to November in Southern Chester County were down almost 5%. Days on the market were up 23% in Delaware, while the number was only half that in Pennsylvania. Median sales prices are similar, with prices down 7.3% in Southern Chester County, while the New Castle figure is down 9%. So it looks like we need a little Christmas to get things moving in our adjacent markets in Pennsylvania and Delaware! Since we share the benefits of havin...

Busy day tomorrow, so this post is a little early. One of the good things about the Main Line and Chester County is the abundance of local vineyards. Today, I stopped by the tasting room for Paradocx Vineyard located at The Shoppes of Longwood Village, just outside Kennett Square. A great place for a visit the room has plenty of light and John Caldwell the tasting room manager will be glad to help you. The Vineyard is located at 1833 Flint Hill Road, Landenberg, PA 19350 if you want to take a drive out there. I went with a bit of an agenda as I was hoping I can persuade Paradocx to be one of the sponors for the Main Line Antiques Show providing wine for the opening night party. Not sure if that will happen, but we tasted a few options this afternoon. You can see their is quite a select...

Part II The Cinco de Mayo celebration in Kennett Square offered variety in the way of a very talented singer, Pedro Camargo, who not only crooned convincingly, but dazzled with his silver-trimmed costume.  And the young dancers from Grupo Folklorico Yaretzi had a surprise in store--dancing a whole number while balancing glasses of water on their heads!  And not a drop was spilled on the spectacular costumes!          A highlight of the festival was the crowning of Miss (Sen~orita) Cinco de Mayo by a man who (I think--but it was all in Spanish) represented Univision TV, assisted by a dapper little Chico who held the crown. After all the royal wedding hats and crowns on last Friday, this was a more down-home version of royalty with a definite local flavor!

The Ballet Folklorico Yaretzi (Aztec for "you will always be loved") of Norristown, Pennsylvania performed at the Cinco de Mayo celebration in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, on May 1, 2011.                 Since 2006, the Festival has been sponsored in Kennett Square by Casa Guanajuato, a group promoting Mexican culture. The Cinco de Mayo Festival celebrates the 1862 Battle of Puebla, in which Mexico defeated forces led by Napoleon III of France.  The many mushroom farms in the area have attracted workers from south of the border, so there was a big crowd present, and the program was in Spanish, with only a few brief words translated for us gringos.            There were trinkets and handiwork from various vendors, and a great choice of food. We sampled some great fresh tacos with all ki...

Kennett Square's iconic Brush & Palette, originally an art supply store and frame shop, will  close after a 25 -year run as a mainstay on State Street. The business is for sale. Wanda Kevis and Bert Proscino  developed a remarkable showcase for local artists who offer work as diverse as hand-crafted jewelry, sculpture, and mixed media. Renowned for design, craftsmanship and commited to conservation, Brush & Palette has been a major contributor to the revitalization of Kennett Square, Pa., voted "one of America's coolest small towns."  Kevis, who attended the Moore College of Art and has taught hundreds of artists over the years, and respected by collectors for her own mixed media style, is retiring May 31st, a recent letter noted.  Prosino, attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine...

With April 18th rapidly approaching many are scrambling to complete their taxes. For those who have recently bought or sold a home, there are a number of tax deductions that that may be available to them. Real estate broker’s commissions, title insurance, legal fees, advertising costs, administrative costs, and inspection fees are all considered selling costs and may be used to reduce one’s taxable capital gain by the amount of the selling costs. That could result in a big savings depending on the final sale price. Interest that is paid on a mortgage is also tax-deductible, within limits. A married couple filing jointly can deduct all their interest payments on a maximum of $1 million in mortgage debt secured by a first or second home. Congratulations to the Kennett Amateur Theatrical Society (KATS Inc.) for their always fun presentation and Tenth Anniversary performance of a pantomime tradition dating back to 1814. This last weekend, Dick Whittington and His Cat continued a British tradition deriving from several sources, including Commedia dell'Arte, Harliquinades, Slapstick, and Music Hall (vaudeville) skits.                        Presented traditionally in the post-Christmas period, this presentation follows the tradition of several standard parts: a young male lead (the "principal boy") played by a girl, the cross-dressing role of the Dame, an animal (in this case, a cat), a nasty villain, villagers, and a plot line from a fairy story or folk tale. There is a silly song (sung by cast and audience), daft children...

Kennett Square residents may see tax increase Property owners in Kennett Square will be paying an average of $116 more in taxes next year if council adopts the 2011 budget as presented Monday night. The budget includes a 3 percent increase for all uniformed and non-uniformed employees in the borough, as well as a 3 percent increase in water, sewer and solid waste fees. The millage rate in Kennett Square stands at 3.85 mills. One mill generates approximately $220,000 for the borough. The budget calls for a 10 percent increase in health insurance co-pays, plus a higher deductible health insurance plan. All capital outlay has been removed from the budget except for the purchase of a loader to perform tasks like snow removal and debris cleanup. The only option to avoid a tax hike is to red...
