The golf scene at Smith Mountain Lake has always been a community highlight and now young golfers have a special place of their own to work on their game. The Laker Magazine’s spring edition includes the heart warming story behind the Smith Memorial Golf Training Complex newly opened at the lake’s W.E. Skelton 4-H Education Conference Center.  The practice facility offers young golfers a year-round place to exercise open driving, putting and chipping on a synthetic surface for easy maintenance. Smith Mountain Lake Virginia  lies in a broad valley nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of rural south-central Virginia. Fishing enthusiasts will descend on Smith Mountain Lake this weekend to take part in the Blue Ridge Big Bass Classic, part of Oakley’s Big Bass Tour. Local news source The Laker Weekly reports more than 500 competitors are expected to participate. Prizes include a $30,000 bass boat, $1,000 for first and cash amounts for several lower place winners. The tournament, in its third year at Smith Mountain Lake, will open this Friday and take place through Sunday.    The Big Bass Classic is just one of several major fishing tournaments to choose Smith Mountain Lake as a stop in the larger series.
