Cmdr. Robert Bodvake stood on deck of the USS Momsen at Everett Naval Station and barked his first order to the deployed group "No Running".  Strange you say, well he was speaking to a group of children age 6 to 12 who has either one or both parents in the military. They were on a "one day deployment of the USS Momsen". The program, sponsored by the base's Fleet and Family Service Center and Child and Youth Programs help kids in military families understand their parents' roles in servng their country. Navy firefighters manned a learn-by-doing station and children got to use the extinguisher to put out flames coming from a grill-like device.  A nine year old was climbing the many stairs aboard the ship and exclaimed "I get seasick". Some completed a half mile run and some were working w...

The Snohomish County Camano Association of Realtors® held it's Annual Installation and Awards Banquet recently at Floral Hall in Everett, WA. It was time to install new offices and recognize Realtor® members for their contributions to the Realtor Association over their tenure. Beth Cooper was installed as our new President.  The Board of Directors was also duly installed. I was humbled to receive the "REALTOR® of the Year 2008" Award from last year's winner, Paul Chrysler. It certainly is an honor to follow in the footsteps of the previous winners.

Today the Herald is reporting that there is a push to give Everett city building permits an extension, owing to the fact that many projects are on hold, probably for several years.  I will agree, it seems a bit redundant to force builders to pay city staff for re-approving plans when building is ready to commence on these projects.   The industry group is asking local governments to relax a number of building rules to help create a local "housing stimulus package."The requested changes include reducing parking requirements, shrinking building setbacks and extending the duration of building permits, which are issued after land-use permits are secured.Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon this week proposed extending preliminary permit approvals for residential subdivisions and slash...

Providence Hospice and Homecare of Snohomish County was slated to start construction on a 20 bed hospice facility at a 2-acre site in south Everett, but the downturn in the economy has forced them to cut it from their immediate plans.  According to the MSNBC website, the project was panned to be completed by 2010.  Dan Harris, a regional chief financial officer explained the situation:   The slumping stock market had been a concern all year, he said. In November, as the tailspin continued, the organization realized "we had to do some serious cutting on plans," he said.   The hospice house project was one of four major projects in Washington and Montana that were cut, he said.  MORE... This is really a shame because for one, it would be a big constructoin project, and we need all of thos...

A local doctor and his family purchased a small 50 year old home perched on an Everett bluff. As the family grew they found that the 1400 sq. foot home would no longer serve their growing family needs. They learned that remodeling wasn't feasible; so it would have to be a "tear down" so they could rebuild on the beautiful lot. They felt like it was a waste to destroy a historical home that had sat there for 50 years.  So they contacted a Canadian Company that opened an office in Everett to buy the home.  This company specializes in moving houses and other super-sized loads.  The home had good bones and curb appeal and charm so it made sense for the company to buy it and relocate it. The owner of the moving company usually buys a home for a silver dollar minted the year the house was bui...

The Arts Council of Snohomish County needs to promote their events a little better.  I just found out this morning about the Fresh Paint festival going on this weekend the 16th and 17th of August at the Everett Marina.  Artists of almost every media from paint and pencil to fiber and glass will be on hand displaying their crafts and their skills.  In addition to these events, they are having the first annual glass sea-float find on Jetty Island, which sounds like a lot of fun. For more information on the Fresh Air Festival of Artists at Work you can visit them at http://www.artscouncilofsnoco.org/freshpaint/  The event will go on this weekend and is at the Everett Marina Prominade. Not a prettier place on earth on a hot sunny day; can you imagine - no phones, no cars, no shops, no driving to it - only access is by boat - ---------- I'm talking Jetty Island.  Jetty Island is a man-made island that serves as a sanctuary for 45 species of birds and wildlife including, gulls, ospreys, juvenile salmon and occassionally the sighting of a rare bald eagle.  There are elderberry bushes growing wild, scotch bloom and rye grass abound. Jetty Island is two miles long and half a mile wide.  There is a discovery hut that holds samples of the island's flora and fauna and  holds the island's history. There are puppet shows and sand castle contests for all ages. Pack a lunch, take a sand chair, expect a short walk from dock to beach and then melt away into another land. This small...

Paine Field in Everett looks like it is closer to having commercial flights going in and out of it.  A study put together by Thomas/Lane and Associates states that local business leaders are in favor of having air access, and that having commercial flights from Paine Field would be a significantly beneficial to the area’s economy.  The executive summary of the report on commercial flights at Paine Field was  presented to the Everett City council at their last meeting.  They are expected to review the full findings at the July 30th meeting. “Looking into the future, scheduled commercial air service at Paine Field will help shift Everett’s economy away from its historical blue collar base and move it toward becoming a new economy type city.”  The study states. In recent months the debate ...

I went to my first real estate auction today in Snohomish County.  It took place, right outside in the rain and cold weather just north of the courthouse.  There were 3 auctioneers with a list of homes to auction off.  The first guy had 3 properties, the second had none but was making public announcements and the third had 5-10.  I only saw 2 properties that were actually bought by someone at the auction for $1 over the reserve amount.  When I returned back to the office I looked up the properties on the MLS.  The 2 properties that were sold were average deals, nothing to write home about.  A good agent who knows what they were doing would be able to accomplish the same thing for their buyer with a regular home on the MLS.  From what I saw today, most of the properties that were auction...

Color makes all the difference when showing a home for sale.  Color can draw a person into a space and create a  warm, welcoming feeling.  The color palate should be consistent throughout the house for good flow.  As professional stagers, it is our goal to keep the focus on the home, not the "stuff" we have brought in to enhance the space.  In this example, warm paint colors highlight the white trim in the dining room and accent the media wall in the family room.  The colors used to stage this home are warm yellow/gold, cream, black, cranberry and sage green.  As you can see, these colors photograph wonderfully and the paint just adds the finishing touch of sophistication often lacking in new construction. These paint colors were chosen for the builder by Diana Young of SISTERS Interior...

Those fighting to bring a University of Washington campus to Everett suffered a great setback yesterday.  The Senate Ways and Means Committee failed to act by a Tuesday deadline on competing bills to bring the University to Lake Stevens, Marysville or Everett, killing them in the Senate this session."We are not going to jump into any kind of decision prematurely," said the powerful chairwoman, Sen. Margarita Prentice, D-Renton. "This is a decision we take very seriously and we don't want to blow it."While she said she can wait until 2009 to decide on a site and classes, the launch of a college is still possible this session."It just makes it tougher," said Rep. Mike Sells, D-Everett. "Nothing is impossible here." Sells is focused on pushing through a bill to establish the college in Eve...

Well, Everett, WA does have a claim to fame; Boeing, Fluke Mfg., the Everett Naval Base and, ta da, the Kimberly-Clark Pulp Mill. Can you believe they produce over a million rolls of toilet tissue and paper products each day with about 850 employees. The plant sits on the Puget Sound waterfront neighboring the Naval Base.  They were recently fined $235,000 for a smokey six month fire in waste wood chips that was meant for fuel. This is the largest fine ever levied on a pulp mill in Washington.Shame, shame, Kimberly-Clark, I'm sure you'll be hearing from the Pollution Control of Washington State. Now you know the whole story of toilet tissue. Enough said.
