Solon Springs - Douglas County Solon Springs, Douglas County WI Upper Lake St. Croix is the center of the water highway which first brought the European explorers, missionaries, and fur traders to the interrior of the American continent. More than 300 years ago explorers and traders came from Montreal in birch bark canoes by way of the Great Lakes, then up the Brule River to what is currently known as the North Country Hiking Trail. This was the portage route from the Brule to Lake St. Croix. The first known European to have used this trail was a French fur trader named Daniel Greysolon Dulhut in the year 1680. At 855 acres, Upper St Croix Lake is one of the area’s larger lakes.  The headwaters of the St Croix River, it contains abundant walleye, northern pike, bass, and panfish—plus the occasional brook trout, brown trout, or musky. The village of Solon Springs is located along the lake’s west side; there are also a number of cabins and nice lake homes along the lake’s east side.  This lake has a more “urban” feel than some other lakes, and you’ll see lots of activities on weekends.  Most weekdays, however, it’s fairly quiet. Lucius Woods Park is the site of the Lucius Woods Performing Arts Center, near Solon Springs, Wisconsin.  The park is sited on a gorgeous forty-acre parcel on the shores of Lake Saint Croix, in Douglas County.  The park itself encompasses a swimming beach, picnic area, campground and a network of hiking trails, plus the Giesen Concert Shell.
