By Cara Marcelle Mancuso, Call a Marana neighbor, I'm THERE!
(Golden Girls with SW Desert Homes)
We have an interesting new neighbor that is livening up our evenings and posing for photos.  I wanted to learn a bit more about him so I did a little digging...   I believe he's a great horned owl, as he's got the peaked ears and is at least 18 inches tall.   What they look like: Size: Great horned owls are large birds, with a wingspan that can reach up to 5 feet. They typically weigh under 4 pounds but they sure look heavier! Plumage: They have a mottled brown and grey body with distinctive ear tufts (which aren’t actually ears) that resemble horns, hence their name. Eyes: Their large, yellow eyes are quite striking and provide excellent night vision, essential for their nocturnal lifestyle.  I love how their neck sort of spins around as their attention is caught. Habitat Range: These...

Many of you have followed Handsome Hudson since he was born almost 12 years ago, when I started blogging about him. I sat at his 5th grade graduation and found it hard to believe he will be in middle school. I know Paw Paw would be proud of this young man and how he has matured since he passed 5 years ago. I’m glad he’s been able to attend their new Doss Elementary School after it was totally rebuilt and will be riding his bike a little further past it to his renovated middle school next year. Hudson, you bring boundless joy and happiness into our lives as we have the privilege of witnessing you grow into an extraordinary young person. We cherish and adore you more than words can express!Sometimes being a brother is even better than being a superhero....Marc  BrownLittle boys are like s...

My oldest Grandson Andrew, an Eagle Scout at age 15.  Shares to me the true meaning of Memorial Day. Bill Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is an American federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. It honors the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.  Origin: The holiday originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 19711. It was a way to pay tribute to the countless fallen soldiers who lost their lives during the conflict. Traditions: Many Americans observe Memorial Day by: Visiting cemeteries or memorials: They decorate graves with flowers and flags. Holding family gatherings: It’s a time to remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Participating in parades: These events often feat...

Carly Johnson graduated with my son, Timmothy, last week from Minot State University. Both graduated with Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees. At this time Carly is focused on T-shirts. I was empressed with her work as few students these days show their dedication to faith openly on a public university campus. Carly is not from an "off the wall" faith, she is a practicing Catholic girl.Yesterday we had an open house at the Titus & Philemon Art Gallery and I invited Carly to set up a display. It was a good time for all involved. Here are some pictures.Carly can help you design a T for work or fun.I also enlisted the help of another artist, Natalie, who works across the hallway from me. Natalie is a super interesting girl who is retired Air Force and is very involved working on props for a horr...

Searcy AR?This does not look like Searcy AR!  Looks like a big city!  Definitely Searcy AR is changing.  I went to a meeting in this brand new First Security Bank building and was very impressed.  We were told to enter the double doors on the west side of the building.  We had to check in and then check out. (The building is so big and elegant that they may have thought we'd get lost in it.....and you could!)  Once upstairs, I took a picture looking toward our old historic courthouse.  Over the years it has seemed to soar above everything.  Now?  See it peeking above the trees and other buildings?  And I saw the roof of the older bank building. It is a truly lovely new building with extensive parking around it and Searcy has changed in an impressive way!  Thank you for the changes!!!PS!...

Black Butte Trail Is Short But SteepThe trail to the top of Black Butte starts part way up the butte after a drive on a fairly well maintained dirt and gravel road followed by a poorly maintained dirt and rock road. Once you reach the trailhead (complete with stocked toilets), the two mile hike to the top of the butte can be accomplished fairly quickly.  Hikers gain over 1500 feet in the two miles, but the Cascade views from Broken Top to Mt Adams can be spectacular on a clear day. There is limited parking at the Black Butte Trailhead (forest pass required) so hikers are recommended to arrive early to get a spot and to avoid crowds.  The hike is very popular with visitors to Black Butte Ranch and and Camp Sherman as well as local year-round residents. Original blog can be read at Bend P...

US News and World Report has released its top 150 Best Places to Live in the US for 2024-2025. Topping the list is Naples, Florida. Probably surprising to some, is the top 25 appearance of Greensboro, NC. While the two largest cities in North Carolina comes in a respective 5th and 6th places- Charlotte and Raleigh- the state's 3rd largest city Greensboro also ranks in the top 25 at number 23, just behind San Francisco. Asheville also makes the top list at number 17. The report states "to make the top of the list, a place had to have a good value, be a desirable place to live, have a strong job market, and a high quality of life".My family and I moved to Greensboro in the summer of 2023. I could have chosen any of the other cities in NC, but I chose Greensboro for its size, location, and...

Snake Season in MarylandAs temperatures rise across Maryland in the coming months, residents of the state are likely to spend more time outdoors soaking up the sun while hiking, camping, or barbecuing with family and friends. But as humans migrate outside to enjoy the summer months, many snakes will be doing the same. Maryland is home to 27 species of snakes, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and basking in the sun is crucial to maintaining their body temperature and ensuring they survive and reproduce. Most snake species like the watersnake, corn snake and garter snake are harmless and won't bother humans. However, there are two types of venomous snakes in Maryland that humans should be mindful of and be sure to admire from a distance. These are the venomous sn...
