The 2009 Plymouth International Ice Sculpture Spectacular is a wrap! Warmer weather on Friday probably worried organizers, but cold weather was back on Saturday....and so were the crowds! The local economy had an impact as there were fewer ice sculptures, particularly in front of local merchants. Also missing this year were the live reindeer. If it's going to stay as cold as it is this year, we might as well enjoy an event that celebrates it. The Plymouth MI Ice Sculpture Spectacular comes to Kellogg Park in Downtown Plymouth this weekend. Starting at Noon on Friday, January 27th and running through Sunday, January 29th, the event features ice carvers from local high schools, colleges, and professionals from around the United States and some from as far away as Japan. Over 100 sculptures are expected to be carved, mostly from single blocks of ice weighing over 300 pounds. Several sculptures will be constructed using between … (2 comments)

The streets of Downtown Plymouth were blocked off tonight for the The Great Pumpkin Caper. Between 3,000-4,000 kids lined the streets to trick-or-treat from store to store. Special awards were given for the best costume, but ... the pumpkin princess pups got my vote! Meanwhile, Downtown Northville hosts Rock 'O Ween tomorrow evening from 3-6 PM in the Downtown Square followed by trick-or-treating in the City. … (0 comments)

The Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk came through Plymouth last Saturday and Kellogg Park was awash in a sea of pink. Even the fountain was flowing pink in honor of those whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer. More than 3,000 participed in the 3-Day, 60-Mile walk to raise money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. Starting the trek in Farmington Hills on Friday the 26th, participants came through Plymouth on Saturday. As a former "Officer Friendly" while I was in the Marine Corps, I'm happy to see that Laurel Park Place in Livonia is hosting "Passport To Safety" this Saturday, September 13th, 2008 from 11 AM - 3 PM. Dedicated to the safety of childen, it's an opportunity for kids of all ages to have fun while learning how to be safe. Eight different safety stations will highlight areas such as auto safety, bicycle safety, on-line safety, Stranger Danger, Poisoning & Choking, fire safety, and how to call 911. Attendees at last weekend's Ice Sculpture Spectacular in Downtown Plymouth were captivated by this very personal proposal ... "Cat I love you. Marry me?". It was surrounded by crowds when I snapped this photo, and everyone I talked to who saw the sculpture wanted to know more about the story behind it. Today we learned 'the rest of the story' in this morning's Detroit Free Press. Randall Walker, a 32-year-old Royal Oak man, commissioned the unique proposal for $500. Grab the kids and come to Downtown Plymouth next weekend to check out the wonderful ice sculptures created for this event that keeps growing every year. Opening in Kellogg Park on Friday, January 25th and running through Sunday, January 27th, the Spectacular features ice carvers from around the United States and from as far away as Japan. Over 100 sculptures are expected to be carved, mostly from single blocks of ice. Next Saturday, January 26th, you might want to check out Downtown Northville's 3rd Annual Fire & Ice Festival. Start the day with the Northville Parks & Rec sponsored "Flamin' Flapjacks! Fundraiser". Held at the Northville Community Senior Center from 8:00 - 9:30 AM, their "sizzling hotcakes will put fire in your belly". Advance tickets are $5 per person or $7 at the door. Cruise over to the Planet Fitness parking lot around 11:30 AM. Lovely Downtown Northville is front page news in the Detroit Free Press today, highlighting the challenges facing downtown Michigan communities in attracting businesses and consumers. The Northville Downtown Development Authority is beginning to see the results of their recent efforts to boost the city's profile. Following up on a survey of residents about what they liked best about Northville, the DDA hired consultants to implement the new marketing campaign. According to the Free Press article, the campaign has worked with "8 more businesses applying for licenses".
