longwood gardens: Longwood Gardens undergoing changes - 08/13/22 10:55 AM
A visit to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square  PA found big construction changes going on with the buildings, which will be interesting to follow on their website.
But it also featured the restored orchid room, with it's ever popular flowers, and a light installation by Bruce Munro. We only had time to see the installations inside the Conservatory. One was made of plastic bottles with fiber optic cables inside to change the lights, and the other was a sea of metal discs with fleeting shadows on the surface.

longwood gardens: Longwood Gardens a Winter Wonder - 02/05/21 07:53 PM
With a vista of the fountain garden quietly surrounded by snow, our hike around Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania was very peaceful, with few other visitors present. But the carillon still sounded every quarter hour, the trees reached their leafless branches into the sunny sky, and the water in the grotto still mysteriously poured through a sunlit opening.

There is no specific orchid display in the conservatories as in the past, but Longwood has brought out some of their exotic orchids from their vast greenhouses and growing rooms. We were particularly fascinated by one whose flowers spill from witchy looking … (7 comments)

longwood gardens: Longwood Gardens in the rain - 11/12/20 01:33 PM

It was taking a chance, but I really wanted to see the annual Chrysanthemum Festival at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. My friend Brenda, who works there in the Visitor Center, invited me to visit late in the day in the middle of the week, when there were not likely to be many other visitors.

Sure enough, we may have seen less than 20 people there. But it gave me a chance to see some nice fall color before going in out of the rain in the conservatory. I'm glad to see their walkways are covered with leaves, just as mine … (5 comments)

longwood gardens: Longwood Gardens brightens up February - 02/02/20 01:45 PM
On view now to March 22, the annual Orchid Extravaganza at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA  is now doing its annual thing, brightening up the space vacated by the recent Christmas display. (Full disclosure, after many years of doing the holiday thing, I stayed away this last December).  As you enter the East Conservatory, you are blown away by the forest of tiny yellow orchids and the hanging planters of purple orchids.

Escaping the gloom outside yesterday, my friend Brenda, who works at Longwood, guided me inside and I spotted strange lights.  You would think as many times as she … (5 comments)

longwood gardens: Orchid Extravaganza Inside Scoop - 02/01/19 07:58 PM

We picked the coldest day of the year to see the orchid display at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.  But it was a treat for my birthday from a friend who works in the visitors' center at the Gardens, so we ventured forth. Because it was so cold, they offered a shuttle from the center to the Conservatory (a rare event, in my experience).  The Conservatory was almost empty, and greeting us was a field of (very carefully arranged) orchids.

And then there were vertical panels of Phalaenopsis orchids, the ones most commonly found as potted plants.
Next, we saw what … (1 comments)

longwood gardens: Longwood Gardens-Mum's The Word! - 11/12/18 12:47 PM

If you were thinking of visiting Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania to see the Chrysanthemum Festival before the Christmas display begins, you have until November 18, 2018.

I visited a couple of days ago just to check it out, and sure enough, those thousand bloom mums were featured, along with spider mums (photo), football mums (yes, they really are called that by someone other than me), and bonsai mums (below).

If you wondered how they get 1000 blooms on one plant, you might want to check out this  mum video from Longwood.

And I do love some of the other plants … (1 comments)

longwood gardens: It was a dark and rainy night... - 09/02/18 12:28 PM
Sometimes I just get determined to do something that does not seem like a really good idea.  This happened the other evening when a friend and I decided that that forecast of rain was really just a chance of rain and headed out to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square.
We had tickets for the 9:15 fountains and music show, so what could go wrong, right?
Then I learned a few things.
1. My waterproof jacket was just a giant sponge.
2. Hiding under a tree in a rainstorm still means getting wet.
3. You can't see much in the garden at night.
4. Chili in the cafeteria … (2 comments)

longwood gardens: Orchids and a Changeable Day at Longwood Gardens - 03/27/18 11:00 AM
Last week, my son was visiting from Tokyo, and we made a day of it at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. He had not been back home in five years, so there had been a lot of changes in that time.
It was sunny, but was threatening to rain in the afternoon, so we started out walking the grounds in the morning.  The meadow area had a new path which gave a great vista of the open fields, and Doug enjoyed taking photos there.

After lunch in the cafe, which appeared to be undergoing a large construction project that set tables under … (1 comments)

longwood gardens: Longwood Gardens Lights Up The Night With Music - 07/08/17 07:03 PM
This summer guests to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania get a chance to see the fountains that have been totally rebuilt and that were under construction for a couple of years. I have been watching progress from 2015, when the old fountains had their statuary removed for preservation and the site was bulldozed.

What a change last night to see all the new features. You can now walk around the upper plaza and fountains and go down into where the old pumps are on display that once powered the water display. A new grotto has been built with water cascading down … (0 comments)

longwood gardens: Escape the cold and fall in love with orchids again at Longwood Gardens - 02/10/14 07:28 AM
The Orchid Extravaganza is on view from January 25–March 30. You don’t have to travel a world away to escape the cold of winter…all you have to do is step through the doors of Longwood Gardens, in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania (although the grounds outside the Conservatory were snow-covered today on my visit).
Living plants become works of art inside the lush, 4-acre Conservatory . Nearly 5,000 colorful orchids hang from baskets, create inspiring arrangements, adorn unique forms, and there is even an orchid meadow (bottom right) featured in Orchid Extravaganza. longwood gardens: Bromeliads come out of the shadows at Longwood Gardens - 05/27/13 01:12 PM

Bromiads are beautiful at Longwood Gardens Conservatory.
Hundreds of visitors spread out on the grounds of Longwood Gardens near Kennett Square, Pennsylvania this Memorial Day. The grounds were lovely, the weather was beautiful, but inside the conservatory these stunning bromeliads quietly acknowledged their superstar status.

longwood gardens: Longwood Gardens Tulips Dazzle - 04/27/13 11:18 AM
Longwood Gardens was beautiful today. We arrived when it opened at 10 a.m. and by the time we left around 1 p.m., the crowds were pouring in. It was great weather, the sun was shining, and the tulips were in full bloom.
It is amazing that whole beds of tulips will turn into beds of summer flowers next month. The pots that hold the tulips will be removed and something else will appear. Of course, I could do the same thing with my garden if I had a cast of thousands and unlimited greenhouse space (!)

longwood gardens: Longwood Gardens Christmas Spectacular - 12/28/12 01:59 AM
If yoy have been intending to see the Christmas display at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, you only have until January 6, 2013 to see this floral spectacular.

Whether in the conservatory, where a festive banquet table recalls past feasts held during P.S. duPont's residence on the property and all sorts of plants take the form of Christmas trees, outside strolling the grounds with trees bedecked with lights, or in the gift shop, where the shelves are emptying at a jolly pace, you will leave wondering how they will be able to top this next year. We paused for … (2 comments)

longwood gardens: The Fields and Marshes Are Ablaze with Electronics at Longwood Gardens - 09/01/12 07:19 AM

If you do not like things that go bump in the night (namely other people) you might want to avoid "On Light," installations by Bruce Munro at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.  However, if you want to see the fields and marshes transformed by bubbles, bottles, and blocks of plastic lit from within, you need to see Munro's first solo light exhibit outside of his native England.
Most of the paths are outlined by lanterns with candles inside, but they don't light your path--I had a tiny flashlight I used to give me a little confidence as to … (10 comments)

longwood gardens: Longwood Gardens Orchids Form Columns, Baskets and Feathery Flowers - 02/20/12 04:24 AM
I am so lucky to have Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania as a nearby neighbor just across the state line from my Delaware Home.  Another great thing is that I have a friend who has guest passes with her membership. We also share a love of plants and flowers, plus we love to walk. What a recipe for a great day!   The Orchid Extravaganza is presently featured until March 25, 2012, so we feasted our eyes on these great plants.  With over 20,000 varieties, the number of orchid species equals more than twice the number of bird species, and about … (0 comments)

longwood gardens: I'm Spoiled, and I'll Admit it - 02/12/12 08:41 AM
OK, it’s been great having temperatures in the 50’s this winter. But when it gets below 30 degrees and the wind blows so hard it keeps me awake at night, I need some respite for my weary mind. So I take myself back to Longwood Gardens in nearby Kennett Square, PA and recall the gorgeous orchids on display in the conservatory in the past.    I know it’s orchid time again, but until I can get myself over there (waiting for a warm and sunny day when the long walk from the visitors’ center won’t freeze my nose off), I will … (6 comments)

longwood gardens: Southern Chester County Market Report and Children's Christmas Trees at Longwood Gardens - 12/22/11 03:43 AM

Since our market includes the adjoining state of Pennsylvania, it is interesting to look at the market report for Southern Chester County and compare it to New Castle County, Delaware.
While new listings in NCCo were down for the year 13%, Chester County new listings were down only 3%. For 2011, Closed sales  in Delaware were up almost 3%, while the total up to November in Southern Chester County were down almost 5%. Days on the market were up 23% in Delaware, while the number was only half that in Pennsylvania. Median sales prices are similar, with prices down 7.3% in Southern … (0 comments)

longwood gardens: The Lights of Longwood Gardens - 12/21/11 07:42 AM
I visited Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania late afternoon the other day and got to see the conservatory and to join the crowd in the ballroom to sing Christmas Carols along with the famous organ. The organ is comprised of 10,010 pipes divided into 146 ranks, making it one of the largest Aeolian organs ever constructed.  We also visited the "organ museum" to see 5 of the 9 chambers, which are behind glass. In the growing area at the end of the East Conservatory, we saw this lovely poinsettia called "Luv U Pink."

On another side of the … (2 comments)

longwood gardens: Longwood Gardens Lets Nature's Colors Take Center Stage - 10/17/11 05:26 AM

A visit this weekend to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania had us in amazement as we visited the Conservatory (above, Lollipop Flower and Scarlet Scullcap).

This is the time of year when the waterlily display is in its full glory, and visitors got to see one of the volunteers who was standing in the pond with water lily platters, picking the spent blossoms. He passed around a flower and when you looked in the center, it was like a little cup holding liquid nectar. Cool!  And the variety of lilies was a sight to behold!
I highly recommend … (0 comments)
