I thought it would be interesting to look at the real estate sales for Key West for the first six months of 2015. I used the Key West mls database for the geographic areas of Key West and Stock Island but did not include any sales east of Stock Island. This geographic area most potential buyers consider to be "Key West" even though our mls database reaches property sales which extend ten miles east of Mile Marker 0.

The paint is barely dry in the newly rebuilt home at 527 Margaret Street in Old Town Key West. I got a chance to meet the new owners, Kirk Thompson and Brett Burch, this past week. The owners explained to me that they were visiting Key West in January when the passed by the house which was then still under construction. The builders (Paul Misch and his son-n-law John Tutlewski) invited Brett and Kirk inside to see what was being done. The simple home at 812 Windsor Lane in Key West did not always look so neat and proper. I remember driving past that house several years ago on repeated occasions when someone would ask "How much is that house"? I would always respond "It's not for sale" to which they would reply something like "We'll I want to buy it when it is for sale." The house looked pretty rundown back then. I know I'm not the only person who upon arrival in Key West the very first time was amazed at the number of incredible old homes packed together in the Old Town area. I walked the streets up and down and back and forth looking at the houses. I took pictures of the places I thought were amazing as if to build my dream book of places I would like to live someday. They don't make Key West cottages any cuter or more perfect than 818 Carsten Lane. If they did or if they could, everybody would own one. But they don't. Some places are so special that there is only one. And this is that one!
I found an old photo of 818 Carsten Lane taken fifty years ago. The house was dramatically updated a few years ago. Just Listed 1019 Elgin Lane Key West. This is a Bank Owned property located in a desirable Old Town location near the Historic Seaport.
I searched the historic Sanborn Fire Maps and found this house shown on the 1889 map (when it was then designated as 909 1/2). When I started this blog eight years ago I realized that one of the things that draws people to Key West is the simple way we spend our lives. If you watch any of those reality tv shows about million dollar listings in Beverly Hills or New York you get to see houses for people that live the fast life, the showy life, the I'm very important life. While I amdit I watch those shows, I don't aspire to live in those places. Life in the slow lane is fine with me.

old town: Don't Buy a House in Key West from a Mr. POTATO HEAD!

One of the very best Christmas gifts I ever received was given to me by my big sister back in the early 1950's - it was a Mr. POTATO HEAD. Unlike the Mr. Potato Head OF today, you needed a real potato to make this toy work. Today's version is made out of plastic and to me that is just wrong.

326 William Street in Key West, Florida is located within a block of the historic Key West Seaport. Most of the houses in this immediate area were built in the last half of the 19th Century. The seaport was the hub of Key West commerce. The 300 block of William Street is noted as having some of the oldest homes on the island.

New to the Key West real estate market is 1024 Virginia Street which is located in the South of Truman area of Old Town. The house is located midway in the block between Varela Street to the east and Watson Street to the west. I looked at the Historic Sanborn Fire Maps to discern when this house was built.
