charity: Zippy update - 02/27/07 01:36 PM
A while back I put up a post titled Can you help? It was about the plight of a young daschund in Las Vegas that needed an eye operation to prevent him from becoming blind.
I talked to the lady at the rescue, they had raised the money and Zippy had the operation done. It was a complete success!  I wanted to thank everyone here who contributed to the fund. The generousity shown was truly wonderful. -Charles

charity: Pups On Parole - 01/10/07 07:20 PM
As some of you may know, we are very involved in animal rescue in the Las Vegas area. Several years ago we were watching a program called "cell dogs" about a training program in Carson City.  The inmates there were allowed to train and rehabilitate dogs as part of their rehabilitation.   We mentioned it to our friends at Heaven Can Wait Sanctuary.
They started their own version of the program at the Jean Women's correctional facility a few years ago. Today, they are also in the Southern Nevada Correctional Facilities as well. The inmates who apply and are accepted into the … (5 comments)

charity: Can you help? - 01/02/07 08:33 AM
As most of you know, Jacqui and I are quite active in our local animal rescue charities in Las Vegas. Today I received an email from a former co-worker of mine who is fostering this dog, Zippy.  Zippy is a year old Daschund who is going blind. He has cataracts in his eyes that need to be removed. You can make a donation to help Zippy here.
Once he has healed from his operation, he'll also need a permanent loving home. If you live in the Las Vegas area and are interested in adopting him, please contact Brenda at Las Vegas … (3 comments)

charity: VFW - 10/23/06 10:10 AM
Today I got a very disturbing call from the VFW. As I'm sure you know, the VFW is a charity that helps our veterans (Veterans of Foreign Wars). Most major cities have a VFW post. I had never received a solicitation from them and am a firm believer that our veterans deserve a lot more then our government currently gives them.
The strange thing was that they weren't collecting for vets. They were doing a food drive for the elderly in the community. They said that they started an elderly assistance program of gift baskets.  Baskets contained food, household items, etc.  The … (4 comments)

charity: Shop RED - 10/14/06 01:50 PM
If you are anything like my wife, you upgrade certain items on a fairly regular basis. Cell phone, shoes and a few other things it seems (to me at least) that she is always buying new ones.  So if you are thinking about replacing or buying something new, you should check out www.joinred.com.  The site was created by Bono and Bobby Shriver and is dedicated to "empower consumers to shop and do good at the same time."   The site raises money for The Global Fund which provides help to women and children infected with HIV/AIDS in Africa. Several merchants are participating … (5 comments)

charity: New Charitable License Plate - 07/26/06 07:46 AM
Last year Nevada added a new custom license plate to their charity plate list. For those of you that live in Nevada or are thinking of moving there, the plate fee is initially $61 and then $30 to renew each year.  Of that, $25 of the initial fee and $20 of the renewal is donated to local animal rescue groups and charities.
One of the charities I foster dogs for, Heaven Can Wait Sanctuary, received a $5,000 grant from the donation pool raised by this plate in 2005.  When you go to the DMV, you have to ask for a special plate, they really don't … (2 comments)
