lapointe: Here's Why (and How) We Desktop Publish all our Printed Materials at our Madeline Island Real Estate Office - 07/20/10 09:28 AM
MADELINE ISLAND REAL ESTATE
We receive a lot of compliments on our Madeline Island Realty three-panel listing brochure and our one-page listing flyers.

One of my listing clients asked me the other day why we take the time to desktop publish our listing brochures and flyers.  I responded by saying that pre-printed listing flyers are, in my opinion, a waste of money.  They don't allow for price changes or photo substitutions.  They also don't allow for new or withdrawn listings.
We have a relatively short sales season here in the Apostle Islands area, although it is possible to make sales any time of the year.  … (0 comments)

lapointe: How SMS Text Messaging Kept me in Touch With a Real Estate Prospect - 08/13/09 02:03 AM
Yesterday evening, I received a cellphone call from a fellow who wanted information on one of our listings.  He was calling me from Madeline Island, using a Blackberry with Verizon service.
He was having obvious trouble getting a decent cellular phone signal in downtown LaPointe.  We were able to chat for about ten or fifteen seconds and then his phone would drop the call.
With his phone number displayed on my Caller ID, I figured it was worth a try to see if he could receive text messages.  And it worked!  We were able to exchange email addresses and I sent him the information he needed.

lapointe: Trying to find "LaPointe, Wisconsin" on Google Earth? It's All About How you Type the word "LaPointe" - 02/07/09 02:34 AM
Google Earth is a fun and useful utility, but it's far from perfect.
I found myself searching for the town of LaPointe, Wisconsin on Google Earth yesterday evening.  And depending on how you type the town's name, you get entirely different results.
LaPointe is the commercial zone on Madeline Island, located at the southwestern tip of the Island.  LaPointe Township includes the entire island.  Madeline Island is one of the twenty-two Apostle Islands in western Lake Superior, situated about seventy-five miles east of the Duluth-Superior metropolitan area.
There seems to be a sort of eternal debate among Islanders (and summer residents) … (2 comments)

lapointe: It Looks Like the Madeline Island Ice Road is Finally Open! - 01/19/09 06:25 AM
I spoke with my friend Steve McHugh (owner of the new Bell Street Gallery) around Noon today and he informed me that the "ice road" between Bayfield, Wisconsin and Madeline Island opened this morning.
Steve said the ice road is currently open to "cars and light trucks".

A midday call to the Windsled Transportation Hotline (715-747-5400) didn't announce the ice road opening, but the recorded message is supposed to be updated later today.
I'd strongly suggest re-checking the Windsled Hotline number before you schedule a trip across the … (4 comments)

lapointe: Is Lake Superior Ice Formation Being Affected by Global Warming? - 01/05/09 10:12 PM
A recent University of Minnesota Duluth study claims that Lake Superior is a prime example of global warming and its effects.

The "ice road" to Madeline Island begins to break up in Spring of each year.

According to a recent article in the Duluth News-Tribune, the Lake Superior winter ice cover has, in general, diminished over the last thirty years, with a corresponding rise in average lake water temperature.  And another study by a local Bayfield resident who researched weather data back to 1857 claims that today we are seeing an average of forty-five fewer ice-covered days in our area of Chequamegon Bay than there were in the … (1 comments)

lapointe: Minneapolis Photographer Steve McHugh Creates New Bell Street Art Gallery on Madeline Island - 01/01/09 10:42 AM
The summer of 2009 will bring the opening of a new art gallery on Madeline Island.

The Bell Street Gallery is the creation of Steve McHugh, a well-known professional photographer from Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Steve has been a Madeline Island summer resident for nearly two years now.
Steve saw one of our commercial listings, located at 807 Bell Street, this past summer.  He was able to look beyond the rustic facade and the bright red paint job that adorned the building.  Steve and his wife Mary fell in love with the location and the property's commercial potential, so they purchased the property in October … (6 comments)

lapointe: High Winds and Waves Force Shutdown of Madeline Island Ferry Line Yesterday - 04/12/08 03:18 PM
The late winter storm that struck the Duluth and Superior area and spread across western Lake Superior yesterday forced the shutdown of the Madeline Island Ferry Line for a day.
The Ferry Line office in LaPointe, Wisconsin announced it would be shutting down all day on April 11th due to heavy snow, whiteout visibility, high winds and dangerous waves.  Regular ferry service resumed today.
The Ferry Line doesn't shut down very often.  When high winds and waves become a problem, the ferry has been known to suspend service for a period of several hours at a time.  The duration of yesterday's storm … (2 comments)

lapointe: Ice Road May Be Late This Year, But It's Still Possible - 01/19/08 04:02 AM
With the ten-day La Pointe, Wisconsin forecast calling for daytime high temperatures in the single digits, it appears likely that we'll see a switch from the ferry to windsled transportation to & from Madeline Island this year after all.  We may even get an ice road!
Temperatures began to plummet in the Chequamegon Bay area during the past week.  Ice is beginning to accumulate in La Pointe harbor and the ferry schedule is subject to change as a result.  Windsled crews are standing by, ready to take over if and when the ferry shuts down due to thick ice.
This season was the first time the Wisconsin … (4 comments)

lapointe: Madeline Island Ice Road Prospects Growing Dim With Warm Winter Weather Predicted in January - 01/05/08 03:44 AM
The prospect of a nice long ice road season for Madeline Island residents isn't very good this year.  Warm weather has kept the Madeline Island Ferry running and forecasters expect more of the same.

Madeline Island residents and visitors are watching the weather.  The ten-day LaPointe forecast through the middle of January calls for daytime temperatures mostly in the mid and upper 30s.  Today, the forecast is for partly sunny skies and a high of around 36.
There's not much, if any, ice in Chequamegon Bay right now, exept for Ashland and part of Washburn harbor.  The ferry passage between Bayfield, Wisconsin and Madeline Island is open water.  And there … (14 comments)

lapointe: EcoWood Offers Sustainably Harvested Wood Products on Madeline Island - 12/13/07 02:14 PM
EcoWood has become much more than the "Island sawmill".  It is a company dedicated to producing finished wood products, such as flooring, cabinetry, trim and decorative panels, in a sustainable manner.   The company adheres to an eco-friendly mode of operation that is unique in the Apostle Islands region of Lake Superior and northwestern Wisconsin.

EcoWood uses only bio-diesel fuel to power its vehicles, sawmills and other machinery.  All buildings and kilns are heated with scrap wood, burned in a high-efficiency boiler.  Only wood harvested sustainably is used.  EcoWood does not clear-cut any forested areas in the process of obtaining its … (7 comments)

lapointe: Madeline Island Neighborhoods: Nebraska Row in LaPointe, Wisconsin - 12/02/07 01:18 PM
When Colonel Frederick Woods and family, of Lincoln Nebraska, built a row of summer homes just north of what is now downtown LaPointe, their actions established the emergence of Madeline Island as a summer vacation destination.

Actually, summer visitors began trickling onto the Island in the mid 1800s.  Among the early visitors to Madeline Island were Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln and her son Robert, in 1868.  By 1895, the O'Brien and Grassie families had already begun constructing cottages along the shore.  Early visitors were drawn to the area as a haven for hay fever sufferers.  And the growth of railroads contributed … (8 comments)
