pets: Life at the End of a Chain - 04/23/12 01:48 PM

Life at the End of a Chain
I would like to talk a little bit about how folks become pet owners in the first place. More specifically, about the importance of how folks choose their pets in a pet store or other sales environment. This choice may be the most important one we make as potential pet owners, because it will impact every aspect of that animal’s life going forward. Let me elaborate.

There are untold thousands of pets who have safe and happy homes right now, because someone made an educated choice to bring that pet into an environment which … (16 comments)

Don't mess with me!
This is a funny one of Repo.. He is actually "playing" with one of our outside kitties ( Bruce) through the front door. He is growing so fast. I can't believe how big he is getting! I have got to remember to get a photo of him on my signature!

pets: Wanna Sleep With Me Tonight? - 11/01/11 03:16 PM
Did you have pets when you were growing up? Did you have cats? Dogs? Or perhaps yours was one of those families that had a hodgepodge of critters--maybe even a parrot thrown in for good measure. Here in the good ol' U.S. of A. we love our pets...so much that many of us invite them into our bedroom with us. Yep. In fact, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), some 78 million households contain one or more pets. And of that number, 70% say they allow their animals to sleep in their beds. Surprising? … (19 comments)

pets: 5 Ways To Keep Your Pets Safe In The Summer - 05/26/11 02:30 PM
The start of summer is often considered to be Memorial Weekend. Along with summer and the carefree days of no homework, vacations, and picnics also comes an increased risk for illness or injury for our furry friends. Many of us have unusual routines during the summer and our animals are exposed to all sorts of hazards. Our pets rely on us to keep them safe so with some extra precautions, we can do that job well all summer long.   1 - Make sure your pet has access to plenty of fresh water at all times. Even the healthiest pets can … (8 comments)

pets: My Prince - 02/05/11 01:08 PM
My Prince

When I was ten years old, we moved from our house (which we had built) in a neighborhood, to a new home on four acres of land outside the town limits. You might say we moved “out in the country” if you consider that we lived on a dead end road with only four other neighbors and woods all around. But as private as it was, we were only 5 minutes from town, so I guess we had the best of both worlds.
There were both pros and cons to living out in the country. Among the … (5 comments)

pets: Lonely Laps - 01/17/11 01:35 PM
Because of a spraying problem, none of our cats are allowed in the house anymore. I miss the warm purr in my lap at night when we watch TV. The house just doesn’t feel complete without at least one of them inside.
We currently have three cats (all pictured below on every blog post I write)…a gray tabby male and a long haired, gray female – both of whom stay predominately around the back of the house. Then there is our black male who is not allowed around back by the gray female. She runs him off.
We feed … (6 comments)

pets: Kodak Moment -- From Kitty to College...A Love Story - 12/17/10 06:02 AM
She was four years old when we went to get him, and she was so excited she could hardly contain herself. He was one of five kittens in the tall box, and the lady told us, “Feel free to pick them up but please don’t let them down in the house.” So the first thing she did was reach for her choice, say that he was the one, give him a name (out of the blue!) and let him down in the house. And zoom, under the refrigerator he scampered. This is how life with Jack began.
When we got … (54 comments)

pets: SOMETHING THIS SAD IN RUNNER'S WORLD MAGAZINE? REALLY?? - 11/14/10 12:03 PM
Last night I was reading an article in Runner’s World Magazine about a family who had been found by a dog who had nudged his way into their heart and found a place in their home. The story (which was true, btw) was told by the dad who was a runner, spoke of the joy he derived from spending time with the dog, whom they named Nick, out on their runs together. They formed a special bond, as did the mom with Nick on their walks together, and the kids with Nick in the woods playing and romping around.
And then the dog … (5 comments)

pets: REINING CATS AND BLOGS - 11/07/10 01:58 PM
Since it is Sunday night and I am not in much of a thinking mood, I thought I would share a few images of our feline friends. Their names are Bruce (gray tabby, male), Weasel (long haired gray tabby, female) and Harvest Moon, or Moon for short (solid black male). They bring us great joy just by hanging around and letting us be their people. They are royalty around here...
