southern california: Did My Subconscious Mind Make Me Miss My PLane? - 10/02/11 09:18 AM
I have been on vacation since September 15th visiting my oldest daughter in Southern California. It was a wonderful trip full of good times, beach, and good food with friends. I was supposed to leave yesterday morning but I forgot a bag at my daughter's house so I decided I would just miss my flight and take the next one.. Well.. the next one wasn't until this morning... Yep, that's right, I spent and extra day in CA. What a bummer.. LOL... It was a very fun day and Rachel took most of the day off with me and we spent … (4 comments)

southern california: Speechless Sunday - Rattle Snake - 07/10/11 02:06 PM

My daughter and a friend went hiking this weekend in the San Gabriel Mountains (CA)... These are a couple photos they made of a rattle snake they encountered on the trail. Now, I see it in the second one, but can someone point out the snake in the first one for me??

southern california: Yard Sales and Pancakes - 02/12/11 12:35 PM
Yard Sales and Pancakes

There’s nothing more fun than starting a Saturday morning with a visit to a few yard sales (or garage sales, if you prefer), followed by a trip to a local restaurant for some warm, delicious pancakes. Right now, it’s a little cool for yard sales where we live; we have ours in the spring, all the way through the fall.  A typical yard sale in these parts will start around 7am and wrap up after lunch, usually by 2pm, and they are ALWAYS on Saturday...not Sunday.
Now Southern California does it a bit differently. They have yard sales on … (5 comments)

southern california: Where Are All the Orange Trees? - 01/29/11 01:53 PM
Where Are All the Orange Trees?

One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have of living in Southern California in the late 1980’s, is driving to work in the early morning coolness and smelling the heavenly aroma of orange blossoms. My route took me by field after field of orange trees, and when they were in bloom, it was nothing shy of intoxicating. There must have been thousands of trees, all coming into the pollination stage at once. Oh, to be a bee in those parts when that happened!
Not too long ago, we flew out to Southern … (5 comments)

southern california: Back Home Again - 12/19/10 11:30 AM
It’s always good to get back home after being away, isn’t it? Even after a week-long vacation that you hate to see end, it’s great to get back to your home again…back to your familiar chair or sofa…back to your comfortable bed…just back home.
There is another side to this “returning home” scenario: that of one who is already at home who awaits another's return. Charlie returns from California tomorrow, and it sure will be nice to have him home. I have been busy in his absence and the time has gone by fast, but I am still looking forward to … (6 comments)

southern california: And So This Is Christmas - 12/12/10 10:34 AM
Tis the season for Christmas parades, and our Christmas parades are typically on a weekend in seasonably cool weather – 40’s or 50’s. I guess this is what you expect in the southeast, until you get down to Florida where it warms up a bit. But on the west coast – the southwest – 70’s is not rare for December and yesterday’s Christmas parade in Pacific Beach is a testament to that fact. Here are a few shots from that fun day.
And by the way, I’m told that it is over 80 there today. Ho Ho Ho!
