West Virginia is full of things to see and visit. The Graham House is located just outside of Pence Springs West Virginia. It is in the little community of Lowell on the banks of the Greenbrier River.  The home is on the National Register of Historical Places and is said to be one of the oldest log homes still on the original foundation in West Virginia.THE GRAHAM HOUSE

The home was built by Colonel Graham in 1770 to 1772, it has served as a fortress for early settlers. In 1777 the Shawnee Indians attacked in early spring. In that attack the Colonel Graham's ten year old son and a close family friend were killed.    Colonel Graham's seven year old daughter was taken captive. Colonel Graham spent the next eight years looking for his daughter. He found her after many years of searching in Kentucky, currently near Maysville.  He traded blankets and other items to the Indians to get his daughter back from the Indian. Some stories say he turned the shoes of the horses around to confuse the Indians and keep them from following them back to the property.Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day

The Graham House is being preserved by the Graham House Preservation Society. They are trying to make the property are authentic as possible. While maintaining the property and keeping the property accessible to the public. The home can be toured for $2.00 per adult and $.50 for children. They also offer tours for groups by appointment. It is hard to conceive what people done back then, with all the advantages we have today. I think anyone can really appreciatethe hard work and detail to just simple everyday things we take for granted today. I can't imagine how you get logs up to the second floor. I know how it would be done today, but I cannot help but wonder how it was 200 years ago.

Hey, Keith - I visited the Graham House back in 1984 when I was at a convention in D.C. I took a month of vacation, flew to D.C., and then drove a new car back to Texas via WV, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, and LA. One of the best road trips I've ever taken since I also visited Monticello and John Adams home; every University campus that was anywhere close to me; etc. I was tourist to the max!

Thanks Russel,

I think that it is really wild how someone on the other side of the country can benifit from something as simple as a blog. I guess that is the power of active rain. Sounds like you had a good time, and more importanlty some great memories. Something no one can ever take away from you. Thanks for the comment.
