Today I read an article in Realtor Magazine; called "Putting the Prestige Back in the Profession" I was taken back with the thought that as Real Estate Brokers our perception by the general public is below, that of stockbrokers, bankers and even Members of Congress...I was shocked!!!!!
What does that say about us? I strive to be proficient, ethical, trust worthy, helpful, principled, moral, decent, proper and just down right professional.
I have to admit that sometimes, well a lot of the time, well most of the time this is a thankless occupation. We are dealing with huge hiccups in peoples lives, whether these are good or bad they are clearly change and one thing is for sure people hate change.
I attended a class yesterday that made a very loud point "Most people we work with blame us for their situation" They get a divorce who do they call? Their kids grow up and move out who do they call? An elderly parent passes away who do they call? (Not ghost busters) Us and we are attributed with and put into the category of the event.
It's our fault when the house doesn't sell right away; it's our fault when the price is less than asking... What the general population doesn't realize is someone has to do this job and do it well. It's stressful, laborious, arduous, lengthy, cagey, and full of surprises and real estate can be down right vicious.
What do I love about this industry; well I've had to ask myself just that question too. The same thing, it's hard and I love that, We help people even when they treat us like the adversary, We see 1st time home buyers fall in love with their home and we hold their hand through the process, We get late night calls, and panicked purchasers all the way to and through the closing process, We get buyers that in the middle of signing closing papers can't remember what their signatures look like or if they even have a middle initial. We have all the unexpected surprises along the way, but most of all we are professionals and yes we are prestigious it's time the majority realizes that too.
